Drink this and live longer? Study reveals 'anti-inflammatory' benefits of coffee are linked to longevity

While several factors combine to influence how long we live, adopting an active lifestyle and diet is the best way to protect ourselves against diseases that can jeopardise our health.

We’ve all heard about miracle foods and drinks that offer the promise of longer life and fewer health complications. But, more often than not, these claims don’t hold up to scientific scrutiny – leaving us jaded and sceptical.

Fortunately, there is one drink in your cupboard that has anti-ageing and health-boosting properties - and its effect are backed up by science.

Dr Andre Brittain-Dissont, the clinical lead at Extensa Anti-Ageing Clinic, revealed that a ‘simple and natural’ drink could help us live longer and reduce our risk of bowel cancer - and it’s something that you probably enjoy every day.

The drink in question? Coffee.

Coffee is one of life's simple pleasures. It's rich, flavourful, and caffeinated, which means it can keep us alert and energised no matter how much we're dreading our day.

It is our go-to drink whenever we’re needing that 'pick-me-up' energy every morning (or any time of the day really) and just like any other hot beverage we drink, it also gives us the feeling of warmth.

But what makes coffee so special? Is it the caffeine, the antioxidants, or some other compound that's helping us stay healthy?

According to Dr Andre Brittain-Dissont, the clinical lead at Extensa Aesthetics Clinic, there are ‘so many fads and trends, drinks and foods in fancy bottles or packaging, making bold claims which are generally unfounded with no scientific basis or merit’.

However, he believes that coffee is proven to be a ‘simple and natural product’ which offers so much more than caffeine.

Dr Brittain meticulously explained that several studies on coffee prove that the drink can not only prolong your lifespan but also lower your risk of bowel cancer.

In a lifetime study, a correlation was found between coffee consumption and longevity.

People who regularly drank coffee were more likely to live to 80 or 90 years old, while people who didn’t drink coffee were more susceptible to cardiovascular disease and other premature causes of death.

When it comes to coffee’s antioxidants, Dr Brittain also disclosed that the effects are independent of the caffeine in coffee.

‘We should understand that coffee is a natural product with hundreds, maybe thousands of biologically active components separate from caffeine,’ he said.

‘These have an anti-inflammatory effect and an antioxidant effect that have been shown to reduce your chances of getting heart disease, kidney disease and heart failure.’

Yes, you read that right! Coffee also reduces the risk of kidney damage and heart failure.

Dr Brittain said that the drink improves your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, reduces the chance of diabetes, and boosts DNA repair.

Aside from these health benefits, studies also prove that coffee can help you live longer.

Scientists discovered that people who drank two to three cups of coffee per day were less likely to die from all causes, compared to people who didn't drink coffee regularly. Keep in mind, three coffees a day could seem excessive to some and like very little to others. This is simply an average.

So even if you can't handle the taste in the morning or you don’t enjoy it, at least this one benefit might make you reconsider, right?

Dr Brittain even added that you don’t have to worry about the amount of sugar in coffee, adding it to your drink could probably make it one of the easiest and most enjoyable healthy beverages to start adding to our daily diet.

‘The important part of coffee is probably not the caffeine, as the large study demonstrated that whether it was decaffeinated or caffeinated coffee the benefits were still the same,’ he said.

Dr Brittain also noted that drinking decaf, ground and instant coffee could reduce the risk of death by 14, 27 and 11 per cent respectively.

But, of course, be mindful of the amount of sugar you add to your coffee as too much sugar intake could lead to other issues such as diabetes.

While decaffeinated coffee and regular coffee both offer the same benefits, Dr Brittain also said that it's best to brew coffee at home if you want to get the most out of it.

‘As often is the case, it is the cheap and simple options which have been around for thousands of years that offer great anti-ageing benefits,’ he said.

That article just proves that you cannot believe everything that you read, As a lifelong coffee drinker it should have made me confident about my health and probable life span! Nope I call Bullshit, I have had cancer and have also been diagnosed with a heart problem. I survived the Cancer (thankfully) but the heart problem is apparently not curable, so who comes up with these articles.

Would be nice if it were true as I love coffee, but 3/4 cups a day maximum and usually 1/2 are decaf. I just eat and drink what I like as if we listened to all the “experts” telling us what is good and bad for our health we would be changing our diets at least weekly, and we would have very little variety in what we could eat and drink.

They are always changing with what they find 🤷🏻‍♀️
For me, everything in moderation!!!
I also think that it’s not what we eat that is killing us, it’s all the chemicals that are used in what is produced. I remember when I was a child, that milk came direct from the farms, bread from the bakeries, veggies and fruits from the middle-men selling along the street on a clunker (?)……….there were no additives or preservatives, just pure foods coming from the producers. Everything now is contaminated and is killing us slowly - that’s what a think!! 😊😊
