'Don't fix what's not broken': Here's why the internet is shocked by this woman's idea for an alternative to toilet paper

In 2020, at the start of the pandemic, we saw how people frantically scurried to stock up on toilet paper, showing just how important it is to have plenty of rolls in every home around the world.

Considering the growing importance of environmental responsibility, the internet is in shock at this woman's proposal to replace disposable toilet paper with 'reusable' ones.

We'll admit, the concept of reusable toilet paper is undoubtedly a strange one and may take some getting used to. But one woman is insisting that we should prevent the use of single-use toilet paper and, rather, make the switch to the bizarre alternative.

A member of a sustainability company named Net Zero took to TikTok to campaign for this bathroom measure, and it wasn't long before her video started making the rounds on social media.

Soon enough, most of the internet had seen it – not everyone was a fan, though.

The reusable wipes are made from organic cotton and are meant to be used along with a bidet.

How? It's pretty simple to use (apparently). The person just has to rinse themselves with water after their business and then use the cloth to wipe. The cloth can then be put into a laundry bag or basket, machine washed in hot water, dried - and then it's ready to be reused.

Unsurprisingly, the idea didn't go down too well with the public…

'Sorry, no. I am all about saving the earth, but this is too far,' one person wrote in the comments section of the now-viral video. 'Hard pass,' added another.

'Don't fix what's not broken,' said a third, adding: 'Sure, you are helping the environment but not your water bill.'

Others, though, chimed in to show support for the concept, pointing out that there was virtually no difference between reusable toilet paper and reusable cloth nappies.

'I love how people think this is gross but forget that we used cloth diapers for babies until like the 40s,' one user went on to say.

Some even claimed that it is pretty standard practice for them to rinse themselves with water after using the restroom, so this is no longer surprising on their part.

'This is standard in Italy,' said one user, with another chiming in: 'Here in the Philippines, if you have bidet and soap, you're good to go.'
Key Takeaways

  • A woman recently went viral on TikTok for promoting the use of reusable toilet paper made from organic cotton instead of single-use toilet paper as a more sustainable option.
  • The concept was met with shock and disapproval from many, with some saying it is unsanitary and others claiming that it may be even worse for the environment.

While we applaud the initiative and the woman for doing her part to help the environment, we can't help but wonder if these 'reusable' toilet paper alternatives are genuinely sustainable in the long run...

We have a hand held bidet/sprayer. It is more hygienic to wash after using the bathroom. It cleans the toilet too which is more hygienic than a toilet brush. About $29 from Bunnings/EBay and easy to install. Still use toilet paper for drying. Cloth NOOO!

Um, I’ll have to think long and hard about this one! As with most things, it will be challenging to get used to a different approach and to try a different method. Full marks for thinking outside the box though!

Yes I would and 25 years ago I used cloth nappies for 4 children and worked full time. The need for alternatives is dire at least someone is starting this.

Shops sell rolls of reusable cotton towels in lieu of paper towels, but I'm yet to come across this reusable toilet paper in the shops.
I will give it a miss.
Those days of washing cloth nappies or items in that nature when my boys were little have gone.

Well we used cloth nappies for the kids. I remember trialing one of the disposable ones in Wagga and then got asked at a Southport shopping centre if I'd like to try the new thing. Guy was a bit miffed I already knew about them. Also even earlier ladies used reusable sanitary pads. I can't see any real problem if we had a shortage of toilet paper. Just need to use the old nappy san in a bucket to clean them. Or even laundry detergent and tea tree or eucalyptus oil. A lot of what we turn our noses up to is old ideas that are now supposedly outdated but still can be useful in an emergency situation

This is a great idea we have a bidet and dry with paper. I’ve thought of using hand towels but these are good. In Thailand all toilets have bidet. Most don’t have anything to dry.

What should be encouraged to be brought back is the Toweling Nappies. Those disposable ones are totally disgusting and are left in toilets, on the ground in the Parks where people, eat and kids play, on the side of the roads where they have been tossed out of windows and they are a major Dump fill. Toweling nappies where always sanitized and washed before you placed them on your baby, never any bad rashes like they have with disposables. This lady is definitely on the right track as all our personal bits are cleaned by the Bidet prior to wiping, no different that when you get out of the shower and dry your personal bits with your towel, hey, do you throw that away after each shower.

Buy a hand held bidet on Ebay or Bunnings $30.00 Hygienic for cleaning the body and toilet. No dirty toilet brush. Still use paper for drying though. Easily installed.
