Being an Englishman and an Aussie too, who first arrived here as a backpacker 1977, I was called a POME Bastard all in good humour! mOiOz I don't know how U got the spelling; Pohm? I have allways been told POME stands for P. Prisoner, O. Of, M. Mother, E. England,
Please forgive me if I am wrong? I use to be a Gentleman, dislectic. But I am OK now! Love to all at SDC and members. Ox
Love the English BUT this reminds me of a joke!
How can you tell when a plane lands in Australia that it is full of English settlers?
Because the whining doesn't stop when they turn of the engines.

I know Aussies and Pohms clash, even though most Aussies are from Pohms.... such irony.
I guess it's the rivalry of one's home, more so than your heritage... I blame it on sport! 😁
I prefer using the original POHM, (Prisoner Of Her Majesty) and POM reminds me of a Toy Pom dog (and I'm a huge animal lover and don't like offending them)!
Just kidding... (I'm 25% Pohm, my paternal grandmother was a Pohm too)!

Toy Pom dog sounds closer to reality!!😄
And another thread (Trivia) is on about gender so shouldn't it be His Majesty?
Paraphrasing Les Paterson, "the Poms, you got to love em!"

At the time of the largest immigration from Britain to Australia (from 1945) when the word POHM appeared, Queen Elizabeth II was ruling, so it was likely referring to HER. I'm assuming that is how most people interpret POHM, after all, they were HER prisoners then.

TOY POM or POM, is also shortened - from POMERANIAN, originating from Pomerania, now split between Germany and Poland.

It was not QEII who sent Prisoners. It was King George III originally who sent the first fleet after Captain Cook claimed the Colonial Colonies in 1770 then Queen Victoria continued sending Ships.

That may be so, but it appears that the word POHM was used/invented only after WWII, when the largest groups were sent.

For heaven sake ... At least do a little bit of research before posting rubbish as though you are a professor of Australian history QE11 HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGIN OF THE WORD "POHM, POHMS POMMIE'. AND SHE BECAME QUEEN IN jUNE 1953
The term Pohmie Pommie or any derivation was originally used . back as far as most seem to remember, although there is reference to the term back in 1910 or even earlier.
I REPEAT QE11 HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TERM OR TERMS.
QE11 DID NOT SEND ONE SINGLE CONVICT TO AUSTRALIA.
I was in school when Elizabeth 11 was coronated. I remember the occassion very clearly, WE CELEBRATED THE EVENT. It was 4 June here 1953, but 3rd of June in London. We are 10 hours ahead of GMT.
My own anccestry includes (From 1850) German, Irish, and BRITISH.. very strongly British on my mothers' side of the family.'
The Coronation was recorded on Newsreel and viewed in Movie Theaters Australia Wide.
