Do you check your supermarket receipts? One shopper was shocked to find out she's been overpaying on groceries for months

When it comes to groceries, we all want to save as much money as possible. But in order to do that, we need to take our time to plan our purchases.

That means taking a closer look at our budget and making sure that we're not spending more than we can afford. It also means being strategic about what we buy.

For example, we might want to buy in bulk if it's cheaper per unit. Or we might want to buy generic brands instead of name brands.

But even if we're being careful about our spending, we might still get ripped off at the checkout.

Such has been the case for one shopper who took to Facebook to share how she discovered that her local store was 'ripping her off' at the checkout counter after she checked her receipt.

'This is the third time I checked my receipt at the checkout after seeing multiple posts online for wrong transactions. I swear all three times I’ve been overcharged,' she wrote on the ALDI Mums Facebook group, claiming that she's been charged for extra items like cheese and bread that she didn't purchase.

While the shopper erased the name of the retailer where she purchased her groceries, many speculated that the woman was pointing fingers at ALDI — after all, she posted it on a group dedicated to the German retailer.

If you're an ALDI shopper, you're probably used to the fast-paced environment of the store. We mean, we usually have a drill around the store — race through the store, toss items into the cart as fast as you can and then hope for the best at the checkout.

However, that routine may come at a cost, as multiple shoppers have taken to the comments of the post to report being overcharged at the register.

One customer shared: 'I never checked my receipts but last week, the guy in front complained to the cashier that she scanned something twice, prompting the staff member to amend it.

'So, I thought I’d check mine after, and I was double charged for an item too.'

'What the hell ALDI? Wonder how many other times I’ve been double charged.'

Others warned that the shoppers should also check the weighing scale as they sometimes read wrong.

One person wrote: 'Always check the scale weighted items, I bought 3 Lebanese cucumbers at $7.99 a kilo.'

'They charged me $14.20, the scales were out by over a kilo, sorry for the people that went through before me.'

Some compared the checkout counters at ALDI with the similar service provided by other retailers.

One user pointed out: 'The problem is at Woolies or Coles you can be watching the scanner to pick up things.'

'At ALDI, you are too busy catching all the groceries they throw your way that you don’t get time to watch what they are charging you!'

To avoid any issues, some shoppers advised that the best bet is to always keep an eye on the register and make sure your receipt is correct before leaving the store.

One comment read: 'I always ask them to slow down or pause.'

'Always check your receipt before leaving any store! I’ve been charged incorrectly so many times,' another shared.

Others confirmed that ALDI actually does refunds for overcharged items, so in case you missed some of them, you can always contact the place of purchase.

One person said: 'ALDI always refunds what mistakes are made without any hassles.'

'ALDI definitely do refunds. But it’s a hassle when you’ve realised it after getting home and unpacking the groceries only to go back to request for a refund,' another pointed out.

The post has also captured the attention of an ALDI employee who confirmed that the company's policy of setting KPIs for employees based on the number of items scanned per hour is putting staff under unnecessary pressure and may be leading to some customers being short-changed.

The policy, which is in place in stores across the country, means that staff are under constant pressure to meet targets. This can lead to mistakes being made, as employees rush to get customers through the till.

Customers are advised to double-check their receipts, but if this keeps happening, they may need to take their complaints to management.

So, there you have it, folks! Again, we encourage everyone to keep an eye out and double-check their receipts before leaving the store so you can avoid being overcharged.
