We know that having a clean home is more than just making a good impression — apart from how it looks, a tidy living space is also important for keeping your health in check, boosting your mental well-being, and improving your mood.
And, for that, you need the right cleaning tools and materials to make sure your humble abode is sparkling and bacteria-free.
However, it can be challenging to pick the perfect cleaning product to get the job done.
With so many different brands on the market offering a variety of sprays, creams and liquids with different scents and special promises, it's hard to know where to begin.
We all know that commercial cleaning products 'claim' to keep our homes clean, but there's no guarantee that they are effective in keeping our homes free from harmful bacteria.
Fortunately for us, with recent testing from consumer advocate CHOICE, we now know which multi-purpose cleaning products perform well
The group recently tested 46 multipurpose cleaners to see which ones have the highest cleaning power and make your house shine.
Of all the products tested, only eight of them made the cut and became top performers.
Out of the eight, three multipurpose cleaners achieved an impressive score of 95 per cent, and are the best of the bunch. Plus, when it comes to price, two of the three are very affordable.
Out of all the contenders, Nifti’s All-Purpose Cleaner, Bosistos Multipurpose Spray, and Citro Clean Super Concentrate Multi-Purpose Cleaner all scored well, with each achieving a score of 95 per cent.
These products are all reasonably priced, with Bosistos coming in as the cheapest at $3 per bottle, followed by Nifti’s which retails for $5, and Citro Clean a little more costly at $9.75.
This is the second year in a row that these three products came out on top of the test.
Rhythm All Purpose cleaner also placed well in the rankings with a score of 90 per cent, as did Dettol Healthy Clean Kitchen with 85 per cent.
But members, beware! If you're thinking of buying home brand multipurpose cleaners, you should think twice.
CHOICE noted that a number of multi-purpose cleaning products from major retailers scored poorly.
Take, for example, Woolworths Macro Multipurpose Cleaner and Strike Pro Multipurpose Spray cleaner, which only scored 30 per cent.
ALDI's Power Force Pro and Green Action products fared a little better with ratings of 40 and 45 per cent, respectively. So did Coles Green Choice and Ultra Multi-Purpose sprays with 40 and 45 per cent, respectively.
Unfortunately, the consumer advocate's review also discovered four multipurpose cleaners that performed about as well as plain old water – and these you should avoid at all costs.
These include Diggers Multipurpose spray cleaner, Morning Fresh Surface Disinfectant, Saba Organics Surface Sanitiser and Rhythm Cleaning Vinegar Kitchen Surface spray.
Among these, the most expensive was Rhythm Cleaning Vinegar, which costs $1.20 per 100mL and apparently performs the same as plain water.
CHOICE said: 'You can pick up a bottle of basic white vinegar from Coles for about 7 cents per 100mL - that's more than 17 times cheaper.'
And while the item is advertised as an 'environmental-friendly' cleaner, the consumer advocate group suggested opting for Bosistos Multipurpose cleaner instead.
'We've often found products that shout proudly about their "eco" credentials are as expensive as they are ineffective,' the group said.
'But Bosistos shows that if you choose wisely, you can have a clean kitchen and a clean conscience, without it costing you the earth.'
