Discover how AI puts scammers in their place and saves your time!

The world of technology has opened up a new era of convenience.

The ongoing evolution of artificial intelligence, or AI as it's commonly referred to, has brought about significant transformations. But what is AI, you ask?

AI involves the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that would usually require human intelligence. These include language translation, voice recognition, and decision-making.

Amid these shifts, advancements have also brought about tools to protect us from those pesky, unwanted calls and scammers.

One such marvel of modern technology is the application of AI. It’s not just about those movie robots anymore!

AI's capabilities extend to a multitude of tasks, including playing a role against nuisance callers!

Roger Anderson, a consultant and tinkerer, has always had a bone to pick with scam callers.

Fed up with non-stop interruptions from telemarketers during dinner time, he wanted to think of how to outsmart these relentless marketers. This motivated him to use AI to his advantage.

The rise of AI allowed Anderson to turn the tables on bothersome telemarketers and scammers. The Wall Street Journal recently wrote about Anderson’s shenanigans of employing AI's ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, to give these irritating intruders a taste of their own medicine.

Anderson produced Whitebeard, a tool specialising in roping telemarketers into painfully long conversations going nowhere. There’s nothing quite so sweet as the frustration of a scammer whose time is wasted while trying to waste yours.

Having the AI tool taking its time, asking all sorts of chatter like, 'I’m sorry. I didn’t catch your name. What’s your name, buddy?' just keeps egging on the scammer, who has no idea he's been baited!

Anderson has successfully launched his call-deflection system called Jolly Roger and has achieved an impressive customer base consisting of several thousand paying customers, as reported by the WSJ.

One of the notable features of the system is the ability to program personalised voices, including the voices of Anderson's friends.

For example, Whitebeard, one of the programmed voices, uses the voice of Sid Berkson, a Vermont dairy farmer.

Customers have a range of voice options to choose from, such as Salty Sally, an overwhelmed mother, and Whiskey Jack, who is easily distracted.

The effectiveness of these voices in wasting the time of scammers and telemarketers is evident.

Anderson shared a conversation that lasted for a frustrating 15 minutes before the scammer finally hung up, highlighting the system's ability to deter and prolong interactions with unwanted callers.

Key Takeaways
  • Artificial intelligence, specifically tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, are being used to frustrate and waste the time of telemarketers and scammers, according to The Wall Street Journal.
  • Consultant and tinkerer Roger Anderson has created a tool named Whitebeard, powered by OpenAI's GPT-4, to lead telemarketers and scammers into a prolonged and ultimately pointless conversation.

  • Anderson's call-deflection system, Jolly Roger, utilises the real-life voices of his friends and has already gathered several thousand paying customers. The tool has been successful in wasting the time of scammers and telemarketers, with one conversation lasting for 15 minutes before the scammer gave up.

Friends, even though advancements of the new world come with downsides, there are also brilliant, and indeed mischievous, ways to combat them.

But remember to always stay cautious online and over the phone. Now for some practical advice: Never share your personal details with unknown callers, and remember, if something feels off, hang up!

Do you think the use of AI technology is a clever way to frustrate and waste the time of telemarketers and scammers? We'd love to hear your experiences and insights on this!

Meh.
I've taken to answering any call from any number I do not recognise:
"Good morning/afternoon/evening! What is your scam?"
Anybody who genuinely knows me will twig....

Why aren't those telcos stopping telemarketers or scammers from using their business?

It’s about time that the telcos do something about the scammers without us having to fork out. We already pay far too much for our phone services in Australia.

Good idea, however, I cannot afford to pay for something that will stop people from getting me to pay them something.
I am training my hubby to recognise scam calls and block them immediately. He is a reluctant online user, however, phone calls are becoming a problem as well.
It is something everyone who owns a phone should learn to do.
As an added security, I have downloaded programs offered by Trend Micro who I use to protect my main computer. They cover me for the main system plus 6 other devices. So, that's the desktop, 2 mobiles and 1 tablet. The additional items were free and they do indeed flag calls and messages as being potential fraud. I have paid for device protection for many years, and it is well worth the annual subscription.

I simply advise people to please contact me by text if they think their number might not be in my contacts list - I have silenced all calls that are not known to me. No more problem. All I phones can do this and probably android too.
