Discount retailer Catch.com.au blasted over 'misleading' deal for cat food

Anyone who says "love doesn't cost a thing" probably doesn't own a pet.

If you've ever been a fur-parent, we bet you would agree that premium pet food is not cheap, and discounts are pretty hard to come by.

That is why hundreds of Aussie pet owners were ecstatic when they found out that discount retailer Catch.com.au was offering a case of 24 cans of Purina Fancy Feast cat food on sale for just $1.45, which is the usual price of a single can.

Imagine, 24 cans of premium cat food for the price of one? What a bargain!

In a popular Facebook group, hundreds of fur-parents said they quickly jumped at the once-in-a-lifetime deal, with some admitting that they bought multiple boxes to get the most out of the promo. One person even admitted buying cat food even though they don't have a cat.

However, many customers also speculated that the "promo" might not be as good as it seemed.

Some users pointed out that the pricing may be a glitch on the store's website, and instead of the whole 24-pack being priced at $1.45, the price was actually only for one can.

Others agreed and claimed that a similar "pricing mistake" had happened before, resulting in customers being disappointed that they were sent cans, not cases, of premium cat food with their orders.

The confusion led many customers to cancel their pending orders after realising the error.

"It's all over social media," one person wrote in the comments section. "People in the past have only received one can, not the box of 24 as described in the description."

Another added that the pricing mistake felt "very misleading" for the customers and "illegal" for the retail store.

A representative from Catch.com.au has already released a statement about the issue and confirmed that it was indeed a pricing error on their part.

"At Catch, our customers are our number one priority and we want to ensure they are satisfied with their shopping experience on Catch," said the spokesperson.

"We are aware of an issue via one of our marketplace sellers that resulted in incorrect pricing on a number of pet food purchases, and our team is working hard to determine the cause of the error."

"We apologise to our customers who were affected and for the inconvenience caused and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."

Even though the retail store has already cleared up the misunderstanding, several customers on social media were still irate and demanded that the $1.45 deal should be honoured, especially for those who purchased what they thought was a pack of 24 cans of cat food.

"I sure as hell will be complaining if mine doesn't show," one shopper wrote, while another added: "It can't be a mistake when it clearly kept reappearing at that price over a number of days. So misleading!"

Others were more understanding about the retail store's situation and expressed the opinion that Catch shouldn't be expected to honour the deal that was proved to be an error.

"Just for those that are unaware, they do not have to honour this clear mistake," wrote one user. "They have every right to cancel the order and refund the money if they choose to do so. It's even written in the terms and conditions on their website."

Another agreed and added: "But honestly, who would seriously think you would get 24 premium cans of cat food for that price?"

What are your thoughts, folks? Do you think Catch should honour the deal for those who purchased the ‘24 pack’ or not?

Well, well, well. I wonder if the error was in your favour would you get on social media and carry on like you have in regard to the pricing error against you. I bet my bottom dollar you wouldn't. So many jumped on the bandwagon only to be caught in an honest mistake. I don't believe the company should honour any claims......it would have been so much easier to contact the company for verification. 'If it looks too good to be true then it probably is" so serves you right for being so greedy and ordering multiples of the product.

If I had seen this offer I might have (tongue in cheek) taken them up on it. I certainly wouldn't have expected it to be fulfilled and if it had been it would be a win for me. I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it, after all we're talking about $1.45, even in these tough times it's not going to break the bank.:)
