Dietitian shares how to order weight-friendly meal at Macca’s while still ‘lovin' it’

It's a common scenario: you're out and about, hunger strikes, and the golden glow of the McDonald's sign beckons.

Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for the overall well-being of those over 60, but the convenience of fast food can sometimes be too tempting to resist.

The good news? Indulging in a Macca's meal doesn't have to mean abandoning your weight loss goals.

The notion of fast food being incompatible with a healthy diet is widespread, yet according to some, it's not entirely accurate.

They claimed that with a bit of know-how and self-control, even a trip to McDonald's can fit into a weight-conscious lifestyle—it's all about making informed choices.

Kristen Carli, a registered dietitian and Owner of Camelback Nutrition & Wellness, shared her insights with the culinary connoisseurs at Eat This, Not That!, revealing that it's possible to enjoy a meal at McDonald's without the guilt that often comes with fast food.

So, what's the secret to ordering a weight-friendly meal at McDonald's? According to Carli, it's simpler than you might think.

She shared, ‘The best lunch order for weight loss is the McDonald’s Classic Burger with a side of apple slices and an unsweetened iced tea.’

‘Opting for a basic burger, such as a McDonald’s hamburger or cheeseburger, provides protein and some carbohydrates without excess calories from cheese or mayo.’

‘Choosing apple slices as a side adds fibre and natural sweetness without added sugars or fat. Selecting an unsweetened drink keeps your drink calorie-free and helps you stay hydrated. “This meal provides a great balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fibre, which can help keep you satisfied while managing your calorie intake,’ the dietitian explained.

At just 250 calories, this meal is a testament to the fact that fast food doesn't have to be synonymous with unhealthy eating.

The 12 grams of protein in the hamburger are what Carli called ‘your BFF for weight loss’ and the ‘superhero of nutrients’, as protein is known for its satiating properties, helping to curb the urge for snacking between meals.

According to Carli, opting for apple slices instead of fries and a sugar-free drink gives this meal a healthy twist.

She also advised caution when overloading the hamburger with cheese and mayo; stick to onions, pickles, and tomato sauce.

Looking for ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle often leads to scrutinising food choices, especially when dining out. Carli’s tips emphasised the importance of mindful choices even in fast-food settings.

However, navigating the world of nutrition can be tricky, as some seemingly healthy foods may actually contribute to weight gain.

To shed light on this, another dietitian revealed ten popular foods that could secretly sabotage weight loss efforts.

These insights offer valuable guidance for anyone seeking to make informed decisions about their diet and overall well-being.
