Diabetes cause and effect

Please read carefully to understand

Diabetes corresponds to an abnormal rise in blood sugar, defined by the sugar level in the blood. This increase in blood sugar can cause damage to various organs in the more or less long term, such as the eyes, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels. Nearly 90% of diabetics live for years with this disease without knowing it because diabetes does not generally cause symptoms at the beginning of its course. Diabetes (or diabetes mellitus even if the term is a little outdated) is mentioned when fasting blood sugar is greater than or equal to 1.20 g/l. It is advisable to check this figure a second time in order to have two blood sugar measurements.

Type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes, also called insulin-dependent diabetes, affects around 10% of diabetics. During type I diabetes, cells of the pancreas are destroyed leading to a reduction or even a complete absence of insulin secretion, the pancreas is no longer able to synthesize sufficient insulin. Glucose is therefore no longer able to penetrate the cells, thus increasing its blood level and causing hyperglycemia.

Type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes results from a reduction in the effects of insulin, which is called insulin resistance. If it does not work well, sugar builds up in the blood, blood sugar levels rise, and diabetes appears.

What are the symptoms of diabetes ?
Type 1 diabetes: The symptoms of type 1 diabetes generally appear very suddenly. There appears a need to urinate frequently, intense thirst, a feeling of intense hunger, weight loss, intense fatigue or repeated loss of consciousness...

Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is a disease that remains silent for a very long time and can progress for years without causing any symptoms. The majority of type II diabetics do not experience any discomfort for many years. Type 2 diabetes cannot be seen: there are no symptoms to identify diabetes before the appearance of complications. The disease progresses slyly. 50% of diagnosed diabetics are already at the stage of complications. The signs that may indicate type 2 diabetes are as follows: fatigue, vision problems, feeling of dry mouth, need to urinate often, feeling more hungry or thirsty, tingling in the feet, infections that heal poorly. They appear more slowly and more sneakily. It is important to know how to spot the discreet signs of diabetes: tendency to skin infections (abscesses, boils), erectile dysfunction, fatigue, shortness of breath, urinary infections, etc.

What are the causes of diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes has an autoimmune origin. The immune system will destroy the islets of Langherans in the pancreas due to genetic factors and/or a viral infection (rubella for example). The pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes is characterized by a reduction in insulin secretion leading to hyperglycemia. However, it is not an autoimmune pathology. Type 2 diabetes is caused by a set of genes that can be expressed depending on environmental and dietary factors.
