Debate erupts online over this ‘surprising’ air fryer cleaning recommendation

Love it or hate it, the air fryer has become a kitchen staple in many Australian homes. But just like any other kitchen appliance, air fryers can accumulate grime if they're not cleaned regularly.

However, a lot of people are unsure about the best way to keep their air fryers clean.

It comes after one woman shared a video demonstrating a simple trick for deep cleaning her air fryer ‘in seconds’ – but it left the internet divided.

Uploading the video on social media, the woman named Rhianne said her air fryer hadn’t been cleaned in a while.

‘Time for the dreaded air fryer clean,’ she said in the clip she posted.

‘This has not been cleaned for a while, and it needs some TLC,’ she continued.

As she pulled out the drawers of her dirty air fryer, Rhianne explained that she used bicarb soda, Fairy dishwashing liquid, vinegar spray and boiling water to give it a good clean.

Next, she put all of the cleaning products inside the air fryer while showing all of the caked-on food inside it.

‘This is disgusting, just ew,’ she said.

Then Rhianne showed the dirty water that came out of her air fryer before revealing the results of her cleaning tip.

‘That transformation, oh my gosh,’ she exclaimed.

But despite her hack having great results, people couldn't understand how it had gotten into such a state in the first place. In the end, her tip attracted much attention for all the wrong reasons.

‘Not cleaned in a while? What? It takes 2 mins to clean after use,’ one pointed out.

Another added: ‘Are we not cleaning them every time? Have I missed something?’

‘Why not wash it after each use? New food on top of old? Eww,’ a third responded.

Hundreds of social media users chimed in, saying that it was unhygienic and unnecessary because it was ‘so easy’ to clean an air fryer each time it was used.

‘Mine goes in the dishwasher after every use!’ Someone else commented.

However, others responded that it was okay not to clean air fryers immediately after use.

‘Do people clean their oven after every use? Don’t get why you can’t use this multiple times before cleaning,’ one person said.

Another shared: ‘It’s okay, not everyone’s got time to clean it after every single use.’

While others shared other ways to clean the kitchen appliance, with some suggesting that placing it in the dishwasher or simply rinsing it with hot, soapy water will do the trick.

Someone suggested: ‘I literally pour boiling water into mine with Fairy liquid after every use, and it comes out spotless.’

‘Literally, soap and water, then turn on the air fryer for 8min. Give it a shake, tip water away, and the job is done,’ one more replied.

While it depends on how much time you have in your hands, how often you use the appliance, and the type of meals you cook, it is still recommended to lightly rinse or wipe away leftover food residue in your air fryer each time you use it. After cooking meat, for instance, you should thoroughly clean your air fryer to prevent cross-contamination and avoid food poisoning.

Additionally, it is not advisable to use water to clean the appliance’s central unit, including its casing, fans, and primary heating device. Instead, it would be best if you wiped these areas with a damp cloth to disinfect them.

On the other hand, its accessories, including the air frying basket or rack, the mesh grills, and the tray, should be soaked in warm, soapy water. You could also pop the accessories in a dishwasher, provided that your air fryer model’s safety instructions deem it safe for you to do. Otherwise, you could clean them manually in the kitchen sink.

Thank you so much @Penny4! Believe it or not, I have a pan that's still a bit greasy despite thorough washing and I think this will do the trick :D
I use Jif if that's the case with a pan. However, mine aren't non stick, so if your pan is you can't use that product. I find a reusable micro fibre cloth does a great job.

I'm like you and will try this ladies cleaning tip. For greasy pans I use Fairy dishwasher but to help get rid of old really stick on grease use Bar Keeper's Friend powder (Coles, Woollies, Bunnings) and Chux hard surface scourer (Coles & Woollies). Wet the sponge fully with really hot tap water and squeeze, then cleaning powder and some more water and then go over the pan. Should come off.

Scalex (Coles & Bunnings) is another great powder to also have. Sometimes, use both powders together. Have scale problems in toilet, these two powders together and a good scrub.

There's always some that just have to be nasty people. It's one person helping others and when I see these nasty people being nasty, well that's all I see. They are narcissistic and there is No way these people are Perfection. I also bet that many have used other cleaning hacks to help them out. Also, why else does one join these FB groups to see what others are doing, get ideas, maybe $sales on cleaning items and see the results. Why bother looking at others suggestions is one is Perfection Oneself.

Some people put their air fryer pans into a dish washing machine and that's all they do. Not everyone has a dishwasher. I don't.

I'll be trying this even for bench oven as well as takes forever to clean out, but I'll get some vinegar as I haven't purchased this for years. I can then add to hot chips and have Salt & Vinegar chips.

Can you use Bar Keeper's Friend powder on non stick fry pans?
