Sure it’s not rocket science or brain surgery, but peeling potatoes still takes a lot of hard work, precision, and undivided attention. If you’re not careful, you can accidentally hurt yourself and cut your finger from one wrong slice.
That’s probably why this one dad managed to think up this “crafty” hack to peel potatoes not just easily, but very quickly too!

Erin Donnelly’s dad had a light bulb moment when he was peeling a bunch of potatoes in the kitchen, and his daughter was there to film the moment.
Sharing the video on TikTok, the older man can be seen using a rather unusual tool for peeling potatoes – an electric drill.
Yes, you heard correctly folks, the man was peeling potatoes using an electric drill!
The father inserted the sharp end of the drill into a potato, skewering and holding it in place. Then, he turned on the machine. As the lump of potato was spinning around, he used a metal peeler to remove the skin.
In no time, the ‘tater was fully peeled. Now all that was left was to remove it from the drill and move forward with the next one.
We must admit that while this hack may not be the safest out there (don’t try this at home, members!), we cant’ deny it does seem pretty convenient.
Erin’s video on TikTok went viral, gaining over 1.4M views since being posted, with thousands of users commenting and applauding her father for the unusual, yet “genius” trick.
One user praised the father for the potato peeling hack, with Erin replying: “Thanks, he has a very creative mind.”
Meanwhile, another person commented that they hope the drill was “cleaned” before using it on the food.
But if you’re looking for a safer way of peeling potatoes without resorting to construction tools, here’s how to do it!
- Put your potatoes – skin and all – in a pot of boiling water and cook until tender.
- While the potatoes are boiling, prepare a bowl of water filled with ice, big enough to contain all the potatoes.
- Once the potatoes are softened, quickly transfer them to the ice bath and let them chill for 5 to 10 seconds.
- At this point, the potato skin should feel loose already. Using both hands, twist in opposite directions – the skin will come right off!
