Customers voice outrage over strict food policy at local cinema

The age-old tradition of sneaking a cheeky snack into the cinema has hit a snag on the Gold Coast.

A local cinema's strict food policy has left some patrons feeling more than a little disgruntled.

Cinebar Coolangatta, known for its 'budget-friendly Gold Class alternative' experience, has recently been criticised for enforcing a 'no outside food' rule that has divided its customer base and sparked a heated debate online.

Anita, a Gold Coast mum-of-three, shared her frustration after being denied entry to a school holiday screening of 'Wild Robot' because she had brought a few dietary-specific snacks for her children.

‘I’ve been to this cinema a handful of times and have always purchased popcorn and a drink combo and brought my water bottle in my bag from home with no issues,’ she said.

‘I’d learned from prior visits with my three young kids that there are limited options for fussy kids who also have dietary requirements, so on this particular visit, I had a small snack (a handful of dairy-free M&M’s and a snack packet of Burger Rings) in my bag, along with water. I also intended to purchase a popcorn and drink combo.’

Despite her intention to purchase additional items from the cinema, she was faced with surrendering her bag or missing the movie she had already paid for online.

‘I was left with the options of handing my bag over to be placed behind the counter or being refused entry to the movie I had previously paid for online with no option to obtain a refund,’ she added.

The incident has not gone unnoticed, with other customers echoing Anita's sentiments.

Nonna Margaret, 75, expressed her dismay when her grandchildren's lollies were confiscated.

‘What has the world come to?!’ she groaned.

‘I will go elsewhere from now on. What a performance over a small sweet treat for my grandkids.’

Another customer, K Raw, recounted a similar experience of feeling pressured to buy the cinema's food and having their items taken away.

‘I felt pressured into buying their overpriced food and drinks, with a staff member persistently asking if I was going to make a purchase. When I mentioned that I might come back later, he then demanded to check my bag,’ they said.

‘To my dismay, he found a raspberry lemonade, which is my son’s favourite treat. He took it away from us, making the situation extremely awkward and embarrassing.’

‘I would much rather spend a bit more money and buy Event Cinemas Gold Class tickets where the staff are friendly.’

Despite these complaints, Cinebar's CEO, Dave Taylor, stands by the policy, noting that it is communicated to customers during ticket purchasing and upon arrival at the cinema.

‘Our outside food or drink policy is actually no different to other cinemas,’ he explained.

‘As a local, family-owned business, we are sensitive to cost-of-living issues for Queenslanders, which is why we offer family-saver deals like four tickets for $49.’

‘Various dietary requirements are catered for,’

‘Because everything is made fresh, our kitchen can prepare various meals to suit most needs, including a range of gluten-free pizzas and Asian stir-fries and curries.’

‘We advise customers during the booking process about our outside food and drink policy and signage on arrival. If they do arrive with outside food or drink, we simply ask them to leave it at the box office counter where they can pick it up as they leave.’

The debate over the acceptability of bringing outside food into cinemas is not new, but recent events have certainly reignited it.

Amanda and Matt, both customers, defended the cinema's stance and highlighted the value and quality of the experience offered.

‘Some families can’t afford even standard movie tickets,’ she said.

‘Cinebar has great ticket pricing with reclining seats and offers a great experience for families. Eat before or after or pay more for a crappier, more crowded seat elsewhere if you don’t like the rules.’

‘Have some respect,’ Matt echoed.

No way would I go to any cinema that does that. I never take food to a cinema but if I did I would just take a sandwich I had made with special diet bread & ingredients. None of their business what is in my bag. Lousy scumbags just out to make money.

Ha! In your face cinemas! My wife and I are in our sixties and have always been on the lower/middle socio economic rung of society, no, not broke but every cent is accounted for. Whilst your tickets are well priced I'll be damned if I have to take out a second mortgage to buy some icky popcorn with some lolly water passing off as Coke, the price of your crappy snacks are outrageous and a royal commission should be held into your snack pricing! Without fail every time we have gone to the movies we are loaded up with our own snacks and drinks and not once have we been challenged by staff. Over 40 yrs of being bad ass, this is our trip to the wild side, what a rush!!

Well, the first time they try that with me is the last time I go to that cinema. Getting cheaper to stay at home and create your own cinema vibe, especially with some of the gadgets around these days. Yes, it means not seeing when a movies first hits our shores but it's never really that long before you can stream it anyway.

May looking into buy one now for Christmas.

Last time I went to the cinema the aircon. was so cold that my poor friend was shivering & the audio was loud enough to deafen you. It was a totally horrible experience so haven’t been since. I think our local cinema had the no outside food back then besides I find the smell of popcorn rather nauseating.

The last movie theatre I went to the seats and floor were filthy and when the projector turned on you could see the thick dust hanging off the curtains. Totally gross, never again.😷

It's only a couple of hours for heavens sake, no one will die without eating and drinking whilst watching a movie.
Thats not the point though it's all about them taking control . Next they will be installing camera's to watch us. No-way would l hand over my handbag to be searched. One way would be to wear something with deep pockets to put your snacks in.When we were young we always took sweets and bags of crisps to the flicks.Last time l went to the cinems was to see''Towering Inferno' the seats were high up and it was so hot in there and watching a movie like that made it worse.

I agree that searching people is overboard, but they are trying to make a living. If you don't want to buy their food and drinks that's your choice of course, but would you go to a restaurant and sneak your own food in because they are expensive?

What kind of cinema sell Pizza etc ? Only if you spend an arm and leg for gold class, the most expensive tickets there are! Ordinary people just buy standard tickets unless it’s a special event or something. They all charge so much for snacks too! I don’t go anymore, and I don’t think cinemas will survive too much longer when so many people who buy the pizza have expensive set ups at home, some even have theatre rooms in their house!

The experience of sneaking in your own 'sustenance' or the cinema experience of highly overpriced popcorn and coke?
Oh my, you really need to get out more, or at the very least subscribe to Netflix, buy a big screen TV and hook up an awesome sound system, cook your own popcorn and keep some "real" coke in the fridge for the cinematic experience. In fact this is going to be your only option soon, movie theaters are on the decline, they haven't survived from Covid. Why are you feeling so down, bad day huh?

I remember when I used to go the pictures and getting bloody annoyed with people eating crisps?

I actually get out plenty. And I don't have to sneak food into cinemas to be able to afford to. Perhaps you're the one that needs to set up a home cinema, then you wouldn't need to sneak food in. I'm not the one having a bad day, you seem to be a bit touchy though, have I hit a nerve?

My my did I hit a nerve? My point was just that if you don't like the exorbitant prices, there's really no need to sneak in food. You won't starve. But then again some people just enjoy the experience of moaning I guess. I actually go to the cinema quite often, but luckily I can afford to buy food and drinks if I choose to, but I prefer to have lunch or dinner beforehand and perhaps drop into Cold Rock afterwards. Win win!
