Controversy over Coles' use of 'Bovaer' in beef—what to know before your next meat purchase!

The food we eat is more than just a meal—it’s a choice that can spark conversation and concern.

Whether it's product safety, sustainability, or consumer choice, many factors can impact our shopping decisions.

Read on to find out what you need to know before your next purchase.

Aussies have expressed outrage at Coles, vowing to boycott the supermarket after it expanded the use of a controversial cattle feed supplement aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In November 2023, Coles announced that select beef suppliers would adopt the use of Bovaer, following trials that showed the supplement could reduce methane emissions by 'at least 50 per cent'.

However, it’s worth noting that Beef in Coles' standard range does not come from cattle fed with Bovaer. The supplement is only used in their premium 'Finest Carbon Neutral' product line.

Bovaer works by suppressing an enzyme in cows that produces methane, a greenhouse gas linked to climate change.

The supplement comprises silicon dioxide, propylene glycol, and 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP), and is manufactured by Swiss-Dutch company DSM-Firmenich.

Although there is no evidence suggesting the additive poses health risks or transfers to meat or milk, claims on social media have linked it to fertility issues and cancer.

Experts, however, have dismissed these concerns as unfounded.

Despite the assurances, many concerns have flourished, prompting some dairy suppliers to clarify their positions.

Victorian farm Bass River Dairies proudly declared their milk as ‘full fart milk’, free from cows fed Bovaer, while Norco also confirmed it had no plans to use the supplement.

‘At Norco, we pride ourselves on making quality, natural dairy products,’ a company representative stated.

Critics of the Bovaer, including former federal MP Craig Kelly, chimed in.

‘Well done Norco, listening to the public,’ Kelly said.

‘We don’t want to drink milk from cows drugged with Bovaer. And we also don’t want to eat meat from cattle drugged with Bovaer – so all Coles meat is off the shopping list,’ Kelly added.

Kelly’s sentiments were echoed by hundreds of social media users. One commenter stated, ‘Coles don’t sell anything you can’t get elsewhere.

The comment continued, ‘They will never get another cent from me – I have been a loyal Coles shopper for 30 years.’

Another remarked, ‘A sizable group of your customers don’t want to eat food that you have tampered with. We just want wholesome natural food.’

Coles defended its decision, with a spokesperson saying, ‘Coles prioritises food safety and animal welfare and we are committed to improving the sustainability of our business. Bovaer has been extensively researched over the past 15 years and approved by leading food safety organisations including Food Standards Agency UK and the European Food Safety Authority.’

The controversy isn’t confined to Australia. In the UK, customers have threatened to boycott dairy giant Arla over its use of Bovaer, with major retailers Tesco and Asda stocking its products.

Arla has pushed back, calling it ‘misinformation’ spreading on social media.

Adding to the discussion, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates invested heavily in Rumin 8, a company developing similar methane-reducing additives, earlier in 2023. He made the investment through his firm, Breakthrough Energy Ventures..

Some confusion has arisen between Rumin 8 and Bovaer, as both aim to tackle methane emissions.

While approved for use in countries including Australia and the UK, Bovaer’s introduction has highlighted the tension between sustainability efforts and consumer acceptance.

As the conversation around food and climate change continues to evolve, companies are stepping up in surprising ways.

In a previous story, we talked about how one major retailer tackled this issue, one cattle at a time. Find out more here!

Key Takeaways
  • Coles has been criticised by some Australians who are boycotting the supermarket due to its use of a cattle feed supplement called Bovaer, which is intended to lower greenhouse gases by reducing methane emissions from cattle.
  • The supplement, Bovaer, made by DSM-Firmenich, includes 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) and is solely used for Coles' premium 'Finest Carbon Neutral' beef line, not in their general range of beef products.
  • Despite assurances from experts that Bovaer is safe and poses no risk of cancer or transfer to milk or meat, some have taken to social media to voice concerns about potential health effects, including fertility issues and cancer risks.
  • Coles and suppliers of Bovaer have defended the product's use, stating that it has been thoroughly researched, approved by leading food safety organisations, and is safe for consumers. Critics, including former politician Craig Kelly, advocate against the use of such supplements, influencing some dairy suppliers to confirm they do not use Bovaer.

Where do I start , it is a long time ago ,I grew up at a farming family, where my brother was taking over the dairy farm , while my parents continued with their piggery. They had land spread out , not joined together and one particular paddock had good red soil and a friend of my father had a building business and wanted to buy that red soil and fill in with good black soil .
So it happened , a neighbouring farmer noticed a truck came in and delivered in the middle of the night a truckload of what later was tested as HCH , a bad chemical which came from a nearby chemical company.
This all took time for it to be confirmed , even the truck driver admitted to deliver a truckload of chemicals, but he was told to keep it quiet. In the mean time cows were back in that paddock and my brother noticed the cows were unable to get pregnant and everything went from there . Media came over , lot of articles in the paper , but the chemical company refused to admit what had happened . My brother was not allowed to deliver the milk to the factory, but he was told , their family could drink the milk .
How can you get such a big company to court? They have a whole team of layers ready to fight a farmer and they had no evidence, but everyone knew what happened .My brother was a mental wrack and he was looked after by his local vet , who took him under his wings . He thought there was only one thing to do, sell up and go away far from where he grew up.
In 1979 the family emigrated to Canada and bought a big property. He build a large shed and started a piggery and they never looked back . Their daughter who lives close by has now with her family an organic dairy farm and my brother and wife grow all their vegetables organic, it is huge as the daughter and family live of that as well and my brother gets meat and milk from their In return my brother helps the son in law with harvesting all the crops .
My parents went to see them about 24 times .
So , this is why I try to eat everything natural and keep myself healthy as possible .I also think a lot of issues we have these days that this is to do with all the food colouring and other additional ingredients has to do with allergies and reactions.
We never or hardly heard of peanut and other allergies .
Sorry , this has been such a long story , but this is what happened for real .

Can’t believe all these people who procrastinate about the effect of cows farting o the environment. Honestly can’t be bothered commenting on something which sounds preposterous

Some people will complain , panic or join the misinformed for no logical reason. At a FREE sausage sizzle for the community I was constantly asked if the sausages were plant based, if the bread was gluten free. Some even got angry when I said we were providing them free and as a community charity we could not cater for everyone's individual choice of diet. It was just a free sausage in a piece of bread !!!!!!! I wonder how we all survived in WW2 and through the 50s and 60s when we were glad to have anything to eat and we survived without being vegetarian , vegan or wheat sensitive. I dread to think of the fuss and individual demands if school dinners are reintroduced.
I am not surprised with the idiots asking about plant based sausages, which do more harm to the environment to produce than normal sausages. Gluten free bread is expensive. Informed People who really have food intolerances would just avoid sausage sizzles. Good on you for speaking up they are free!

Have a look at the chemicals they use to get the caffeine out, to make decaffeinated coffee. Its frightening. I drink normal coffee now after seeing what they use in the decaf coffee process.
I expect that the extraction process of caffeine from coffee would involve some aromatic hydrocarbon, aldehyde or ketone just looking at caffeine's chemical structure.

And don't forget that caffeine is a distant cousin of cocaine and heroin - they are both from the organic family of alkaloids.

Time to do some research!

I did and it makes for interesting reading 🎅

Did a five minute literature search on solubility of caffeine in various solvents. Such lovely solvents such as benzene, pyrrole, dichloromethane, ethanol, acetone, chloroform and pyridine were mentioned. Many of which are a more effective solvent than water. What has to be considered is mutual solubility of caffeine itself and the associated substances which give coffee its distinctive flavour. Sorry about the technicality of my blurb!

However, reference to caffeine extraction on a commercial basis is a bit difficult to find.

More research required!

Just goes to show how precious we have become. Does all the "gluten free" and "lacatose free" syndromes come from produce/products being banished from human diets when pregnant or in young children so that sensitivities have been the result? Or is it in fact a result of all the chemicals applied to wheat etc and pastures that people are sensitive to? If so, does this not sound a warning about this fart suppression crap that is now being applied to pasture/animals?
I think you might be correct is this why we have so many autistic children ? Children with mental health issues ? Out of control anger ? Interesting thought

One should not put raw meat on a wooden cutting board as shown in image above and at the same time complaining about a fart suppressant for cows.

Times have changed.
About 10 years ago I was in The Lions Club and we put on a free Sausage sizzle paid for by a big company to say thank you on Australia Day.
We served hundreds of People, it was huge, all hands on deck, we ended up raiding the local shop for more bread, eggs and not one complaint, not one enquirers if its plant based or whatever, they were just glad to get a freebee and it was Australia Day as well.

Wood is porous and harbors germs. Unless you frequently bleach and wash the board it can make you very ill. Best only used for bread etc where no leaching of juices occurs.
I only ever use a wooden or glass board never plastic as apparantely plastic gets tiny bits off them that you can’t see when cut. 🎅

My late husband who was a qualified chef would only use wooden boards. Of course these were washed regularly and disinfected. He said that other boards would blunt his knives and so I’ve carried on with his instructions 🎅

The increasing prevalence of autism and related developmental disorders is due to the increased ability of medical specialists to make a diagnosis and the broadening of the criteria for such diagnosis. Not an increase in "harmful" chemicals in food, drink or the environment. Remember "Doctor" Andrew Wakefield, the charlatan who proposed that the preservative in MMR vaccines caused autism? That ended well for him! :ROFLMAO:

Same could be said for ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and fragile X syndrome.

Panic over nothing all of the things Tig2 points out are if you get it on you, or splashed in the eyes, or swallow it in its raw state. They said there is no proof it passes to humans. It is also in the Premium cuts of meat which none of us can afford anyway, so it really doesn't matter.

The uninformed loonies have escaped again. Looks like all the nutters have found a new conspiracy theory bandwagon to jump on. Do people feel better taking part in mass hysteria?

Why don't people just take a few seconds to look up the proper facts about this or is everything true what they read on social media? Stop being a sheep and writing such fake rubbish!!!
The main thing is......"...the product is not present in the milk or meat from an animal and there is no exposure to consumers."

This is what the Meat & Livestock Australia has to say about it..
