'Completely unacceptable': Act of violence strikes historical venue days before Australia Day

Australia Day is a time of reflection about the country's history and identity.

With this, historic places are also preparing for a surge of Aussies ready to pay tribute to the nation's most influential figures.

However, one of these places recently condemned a 'completely unacceptable' act just before the celebrations.

The Prime Ministers Avenue, located in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, was opened in 1940 to commemorate Australia's long roster of leaders.

However, on a quiet Thursday morning, the garden's serene atmosphere was disrupted by an act of destruction.

Anonymous individuals recently targeted The Prime Ministers Avenue and did severe damage to the property.

The busts of former Labor leaders Paul Keating and Kevin Rudd were decapitated.

Meanwhile, nameplates of over 20 bronze statues were obscured with spray paint.

According to Ballarat Senior Sergeant Brad Hall, the total damage reached about $140,000.

'Most of the busts had red crosses painted on them; there was another commentary around "The Commonwealth will fall" and other political rhetoric,' Sgt Hall added.

The City of Ballarat expressed their sentiments about the incident online.

'The City of Ballarat strongly condemns graffiti and vandalism of any kind. This type of senseless damage is completely unacceptable,' the council wrote in a statement.

'It is not only extremely costly to our ratepayers and will divert money away from critical Council services, but it detracts from Ballarat as a city.'

Mark Schultz, the chair of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens Foundation, echoed the council's sentiments.

'We hope the vandals are identified and charged and appropriately dealt with by the law,' Mr Schultz said.

The busts are now covered and surrounded by temporary fencing.

The Victoria Police have already started investigations into the incident

The council also urged community members to assist in the investigation.

'If anyone has any information in relation to this, we'd encourage them to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,' the council ended their statement.

This incident should be a reminder that while Australians celebrate the nation's achievements, they should also protect the country's historic symbols and everyone's shared history.

The vandalism was more than just an attack on inanimate objects; it was an affront to the collective memory and respect Aussies hold for those who led the country.

Unbelievable! And if found they'll get a slap on the wrist & let go. When are our courts going to get serious with these low life!! They should have security cameras at all these sites. Can't believe they didn't have cameras at the Captain Cook memorial. No matter how u feel about our history it's OUR history & has to be preserved. And stop brain washing children at school. We are very lucky it was England that colonised Australia & not one of the very brutal European countries! Happy Australia day everyone! Best country in the world 🌎 🇦🇺
Every year they deface cook and/or the cottage and still no security cameras! It’s not rocket science!

Silly vandels sturing up troubel wasn't Kevin Rudd the PM that said sorry. It goes to show that the vandals are just out to mess up and trying to get the First Nation people offside again. This is a celebration of Australia OUR land, not their land or the whites land it is Our Land. Cook did not land on this day. he landedin April 1770

It doesn't appear to be politically motivated. More likely young idiots. Also not influenced by teachers.
Prime ministers of any p have been attacked. I agree they need decent punishment when found.

Well, I believe the current prime minister and his buddies should all pay for reparations out of their OWN POCKETS, as it was probably done by the delinquents he has let into this once grand country with no background checks or any of the bottom feeder Australians they have incited to hate and defile anything Australi.n

The vandals have not been caught yet. So how can you say deport them back to where they came from? I'm not saying that the vandals should not be convicted if found. Just saying get your facts right before charging in :cool:
I think you will find Mustang said "if caught" then we would know. Either way the justice system needs to get some testies and make any vandilism or destruction to be rectified and fully paid for by the shit mentality that is doing this. Courts need to get the bloody message out there that Australians have had more than a gut full and are no longer just handing out a slap on the wrist with a few stern words.

WHEN they are caught - and that should be soon - then deport them where they will not be tolerated destroying statues .

You need to read it correctly, I know they hadn't been caught and I did say IF they are caught.
Where are you going deport them to?? I am able to read. You stated, "deport them back to where they came from". Your own words.

WHEN they are caught - and that should be soon - then deport them where they will not be tolerated destroying statues .
Where are you going to deport these vandals to??? Again jumping into assumptions before the full facts are known.

Why did Mustang not state that fact, if caught, instead of jumping in and saying "deport them back to where they came from"

Until they are caught we won't know the full facts, it's a shame that people have to be so destructive. Australians should be proud of their country and have some respect.

Politics aside. I have to make mention of the way times have changed when it comes to having power to discipline your children.
The inability to deal with boundaries, and, subsequent deliberate flaunting of authority can very well lead to such morally criminal vandalism.
Do the same to their E-bikes, or maybe even, little dinkies (they could be that young), it would be interesting to see how they respond to the shoe being on the other foot. I'm sure if they did this to something that mummy or daddy owns, it would not go unpunished....or would it?
I don't agree with physical punishment, but there are ways of building the behaviour of kids from a very young age to recognise right from wrong, and, not being a sheep by following the Richard head behaviour of their mates.
Things have to change.

Mindless idiots with nothing better to do that destroy property. Councils need to install CCTV cameras so footage can be accessed, and these idiots identified, brought to justice, fined and or jailed. Force these idiots to pay for the cleanup and restoration work. If these low life individuals do not have any way of paying for the damage, then they should be forced to do supervised work until the debt is paid.

I think most of this vandalism is the product of brainless idiots with nothing better to do with their time. I agree there needs to some form of discipline and guidance, instead of all of these children being brought up in homes where parents will not tell their children "NO". While I do not agree with knocking any child senseless; we (children of my generation 60's 70's) came to no harm when our parents gave us a swift "Wack" across our backsides because we had not done what we were told to do/ given our parent any backchat/ lip. I think the Doo Gooders need to rethink their " sit in the naughty corner" strategy.
