Coles just announced major changes to home delivery – Here’s what you need to know

Many of us here at the SDC are big fans of home delivery services. There’s no need to leave the house or wait around – what could be more convenient?
Unfortunately, these services do come with a few downsides. For instance, they can sometimes be quite expensive and depending on where you live, there may not even be any delivery services available at all. Sometimes, it can often take a while for everything to arrive at your door.
Luckily, Coles has just announced some very exciting changes to its home delivery service that will make the lives of supermarket shoppers much easier.
Coles announced a major improvement to one of their home delivery services: the ‘Rapid Click & Collect’. The retail giant shaved off 30 minutes from its original program – which means shoppers can now collect their groceries within less than an hour of placing their order online.
Coles said the new-and-improved Rapid Click & Collect service will ‘make shopping faster and easier’ for customers, promising that they aim to provide a more convenient experience for Aussies everywhere.
The modification allows customers to choose from an extended range of over 20,000 items – including some that were previously unavailable for home delivery such as the roast chicken, and a variety of liquor (available at selected stores only).
After a successful trial, the service is now available in 400 stores across the country and will be rolled out to 200 more locations in early 2023.

Steven Cain, Chief Executive Officer at Coles, explained that customers are now looking for more options that ‘allow them to shop anytime, anywhere, and anyhow’.
He added: ‘Our Rapid Click & Collect service has grown in popularity since launching in February last year.’
He shared that, according to their research, people gravitate towards convenience and immediate collection of their items.
‘Rapid Click & Collect in under 60 minutes will make it easier for customers to have their groceries conveniently delivered to their car boot as quickly as possible when they don’t have time to shop inside the store.’
But there is a catch: customers will pay a flat fee of $5 for orders to be ‘picked, packed, and ready’ for collection. Additionally, the Rapid Click & Collect service is only available between 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily. Lastly, you can only purchase a maximum of 40 items, with a minimum spend of $30*.
If you’re a Coles Plus member, you’ll continue to receive free Rapid Click & Collect as part of subscription benefits. If you’d like to pick up your orders instead, you can use the Coles app to notify the store when you are on your way to collect your items – for extra convenience.
The launch of this new service comes after Coles opens its digitised supermarkets in Cheltenham, which offers new technology such as digital ticketing across the grocery and fresh produce - this eliminates the need for paper tickets.
Southland is also introducing digital scales in the fresh produce area which use artificial intelligence (AI technology) to automatically detect the kind of fruit or vegetable weighed – to speed up the shopping process in stores. In the deli area, a new queue monitoring technology will help reduce waiting times for shoppers.
*Minimum spend of $30 is available for the new ‘Rapid Click & Collect in under 60 minutes’ service only.
