Coles customer appalled by fellow shopper's outfit choice – was she reasonable to call it out?

When we say that going to the grocery store has become a mundane task, we bet most of you folks here will probably agree.

Making a shopping list, driving to the local supermarket, roaming from aisle to aisle, loading up our trolleys or baskets, and then heading to pay at the checkout – at this point, almost every weekend is pretty much a routine already.

That is probably the reason why some shoppers no longer felt the need to "dress up" whenever they have to go to the local supermarket. Just take a look at the woman featured here in the story…

During an early-evening visit to Coles, a customer saw another shopper wearing an outfit that she felt was inappropriate for a supermarket and was shocked and appalled.

The shopper, who had visited a Coles store on Friday night, was passing by the frozen food aisle when she spotted a woman dressed in nothing but a pair of sneakers and a dressing gown.

"OMG, seriously, how lazy do you have to be to not bother getting dressed?" said the concerned shopper in a message to Yahoo News Australia. She snapped the picture above, showing the "inappropriate" outfit in question, and shared it with the news outlet.

"Has all dignity gone out the window when leaving the house?" She commented on the shopper's apparent "slothful" lifestyle while expressing her disbelief in what she had just witnessed.

This isn't the first time a supermarket shopper's outfit has raised eyebrows on social media.

Just a month ago, a worker at Woolworths provoked a discussion on social media by making fun of a customer who was wearing thongs and jeans at the same time.

In a now-deleted video on TikTok, the Woolies staffer wrote: "don't you dare come into my store looking like this" in the caption, implying that they can't stand seeing people pair jeans with thongs.

Many other users on social media have criticised the Woolies employee harshly in the comments section after quickly recognising the video as "discrimination" against innocent customers.

"It's not okay to judge other people like that," one user wrote, with a second one agreeing and adding, "Seriously just do your job, judging customers by what they wear IS NOT in your job description. Be better."

A third user has also called out the Woolies staffer, saying: "What kind of punk films a customer while working?"

Earlier this year, we also wrote a story about a woman being called out for her "inappropriate" attire in the supermarket.

Sophie Allen, a fitness influencer and certified personal trainer from Sydney, encountered "disapproving" looks from other customers while shopping in a tight-fitting black sports top and purple workout leggings.

"It happens anytime I go into a supermarket after a training session in my crop top. It’s so disappointing that in 2022 women are still being judged for their choice in clothing," said the 31-year-old gym-goer.

What are your thoughts, folks? Do you believe that there are clothes that should not be worn in a grocery store? Or do you believe that people should be able to shop in whatever attire they feel most comfortable in?

Thongs and jeans x- how off is that? I’m 74 and wear jeans. Can’t go into some shops without something on feet. As I hate shoes and have so much trouble with them I wear thongs . Shame on me - get a life.
I see nothing wrong in that either. You have good reason, 74 and doing shopping in things is getting a Life!

Actually not everyone judges others, but you are correct we should keep it to ourselves if we do and yes good manners and courtesy are very rare these days.
We judge everything. We have to. Our vision, our senses. You judged my comment. All the best

Looks like the lady wearing the dressing gown has everything covered. Saying she was only wearing a dressing gown and joggers is a bit misleading,I presume she had pyjamas or nighty on too. I think it is quite rude to take photos of people and put it on social media without their knowledge. We don’t know why she chose to go out dressed like that but is it really anyone else’s business. Too many busy bodies for my liking.

Seriously??!! Okay I'll be serious then ... I would have actually giggled, and probably given the time of year, being Winter (and some days it is a chore to even leave the house when it so cold), would have slightly envied her in having the guts to do so. And thongs with jeans??!!! How disgusting ... yep, I'm disgusting then too, because I do it all the time, weather permitting. Each to their own, whatever floats your boat, do as you will, etc., as long as you keep it decent, i.e. don't bare it all and mentally scar everyone ...

Yipee, Walmart has finally arrived in Australia. Love those photos on Youtube lol. Seriously though I once rocked up at a Coles store wearing my flannel P.J's and bedsocks as I had just been discharged from an unexpected 4 day stay in hospital and needed to get food for dinner that night. Son also refused to let me walk after the operation and made me get in a wheelchair. Nobody looked twice as more often than not there are teenagers there wearing their flannel pajama bottoms, slippers and hoodies all the time.

I had just come form the swimming pool ,dressed in a towelling robe and thongs. I needed something urgently and shopped looking like this but a towelling robe . As we live at the beach it was "overdressed"compared to many shoppers in bikini top and shorts!
I was just about to write such a comment myself but thought I'd read all the comments to see if anyone is like me & there you are!

I swim at least twice a week and sometimes pop into the supermarket on the way home - yes, in a big fluffy dressing gown over my cossie! Shock horror!!! In summer - no dressing gown, just a towel wrapped around for modesty (which many people don't bother with!) but there's nowhere near the side eye ....... maybe because cossie is more on display? In summer, many people say they wish they'd just had a swim ...... It's a supermarket, not a restaurant or nightclub so why does it matter to anyone? If you don't like it, you don't do it yourself & that should be the end of it.

Well, it beats wearing budgie-smugglers to the shops.
LOL! My gorgeous husband was a professional swimmer with an amazing physique but even he drew the line at the budgie smugglers...... it was mainly so women wouldn't ogle him in public like they did at the pool though 🤣

You and I obviously have a different idea of what it means to judge someone.
Correct. A thought can be positive, negative. We judge everything, distances, weather, danger, comments. "Gee, that person must be cold, wearing a T shirt". One of my judgements, is standing up for what I believe. Have a great day, the English language is always developing 🙂
