Coles’ latest checkout change has customers fuming

Ah, supermarkets. While they've certainly made our lives a lot more convenient, they can often be a source of frustration as well. Here at the Seniors Discount Club, we often hear about supermarket woes. This is why we feel compelled to share this recent development that has left many customers fuming.

The retail giant has introduced more self-serve checkouts—some even with conveyor belts—in many of its stores nationwide. However, this has also reduced the number of manned checkouts, meaning there are fewer checkouts with Coles staff to help customers. This is a change that hasn't gone down too well amongst some loyal Coles shoppers.

In a video shared on social media, one disgruntled customer accused the supermarket of 'really making us all look like morons'. She went on to say, 'What a chump. I'm out here working for Coles, and I'm not even getting a staff discount on my price-gouged groceries,' while scanning her items at the checkout.

It's not just the lack of assistance that has customers upset. There's a growing number of people expressing their disapproval on social media about these major changes to the checkout system. 'Coles, you are a disgrace! The checkout situation at Southland is unacceptable,' one frustrated shopper wrote on Facebook.

Others shared similar frustrations, with one longtime Coles shopper stating how they were ready to leave their 'loyalty' behind due to the growing inconvenience brought about by the 'push for the self-serve checkouts.

They also reassured customers that team members are available to assist them at self-serve checkouts whenever required, adding that the supermarket is employing more staff now than it was five years ago.

At Redcliffe Qld our local Coles now has several self serve checkouts and sometimes 1or 2 manned checkouts. The sad thing is that the checkout which was previously for people with only a few items has now been changed to a normal manned checkout. People with a few items are forced to either self serve or line up and wait. I admit we have given up and now use the conveyor belt checkout for our large shop. We always shop as a couple so it`s not a problem. It does make me grit my teeth, service is something disappearing in all sorts of of situations these days.

Just imagine when all there is are the self serve checkouts and none for serviced. There will be all the customers queueing up to use the self serve checkouts so creating long lines especially for people who are slow or have a problem with the checkout. Several times when I have opted to use these I have had a problem requiring the worker for help as the machine says assistance needed. I only use them if I have one or two items and would much prefer to wait at a manned checkout.

Unfortunately Woolies is the same. They have less and less checkouts open hoping we'll get sick of waiting and go through the self-serve. I refuse to but I also let it be known I'm NOT happy. It maybe a little dearer but I have started shopping at my local SPAR shop which is a smaller family run business open front 6am to 9:30pm 7 days and a good many products are the same price as the big duopoly.

Totally agree, I don’t need someone else handling all my goods when they have just touched someone else’s goods and prior to that wiped their nose

Completely agree. As soon as Coles in my area go to all self serve will be the last time I shop there. Will go to Woollies and if they go all self serve then I will go to IGA. At least they have plenty of staff to serve you.

I like someone to serve me, only because I have back and shoulder problems, and my feet aren’t any better so by the time I’m finished walking around I’m done, and it’s nice to have a bit of a rest for a minute 😂

If you read the whol article you will see there are more staff at Coles than there was 5 years ago. Checkout staff don’t loose their jobs, they work elsewhere in the store replenishing stock, filling on line orders etc.
...they have more staff because they have more volume and that's why they want to reduce staff.... next they will be phasing in plastic bags (not as bio degradable as the old) at a cost to the customer!....sorry, to save the environment. ....all the other packaging in the store remains the same, maybe they might start wrapping up the bananas.......disposable bags cost them hundreds of thousands per year, the customer should pay?? bags are now Avery profitable line of merchandise for these supermarkets....watch them

My local Woolies is doing something similar (except there are no conveyor bets...yet). If you have a large shop you want to have a checkout person process it for you, knowledgably, quickly and efficiently. Also, the friendly interaction adds to the experience, for me at least! Less jobs for kids and older staff isn't good. Plus customers doing the work, much less efficiently, adds up to making the fortnightly shop a slow, painful ordeal, rather than a fairly quick, pleasant experience.

So many changes at all the supermarkets. I called into Aldi to buy a couple of items only. Yes they now have self checkouts too.
What I really liked was only one person was using the self checkout yet, there was a lineup of customers waiting for service at the manned checkouts.
Our coles now have fewer manned checkouts as they have extended their self checkouts.
In Coles there is always lineups for the manned checkouts yet they open more self checkouts, how ridiculous.
In a small town like Queanbeyan NSW it’s just pathetic this is happening. My ethos is” They don’t pay me to serve myself, so why should I do it?” They say they employ more staff now but, where are they?
Exactly what I thought....where are the extra staff? Never anyone wandering the floor to ask if you have a query. You have to go to the so called "service" desk and wait for the checkout operator to stop serving. Good luck with that. I just walk out if I cannot find what I want.

We can handle all our goods and put them into our trolley, then handle them onto the conveyor belt, we can put them back into the trolley and take them out to put in the car, but we Can't scan them !!!!! Why not ? Why should we be paid for scanning then ourselves ?

We absolutely refuse to use these self-service checkouts on principal. On the principal that I I wanted to scan, check and pack groceries, I'd have applied for a job as a 'checkout chick ' !
If they were giving us a 10% discount for doing their work, it wouldn't be so bad, but we still pay the same HIGH prices !
I don't know they claim they are employing MOREpeople - yes, there are more workers getting in your way packing shelves during the day, but that is only because they are employing LESS people to pack the shelves after hours !
The rises in prices are ridiculous. Yes, everything is more expensive, but, I bet the poor farmers are not laughing all the way to the bank ! The higher and higher prices are going straight to the middlemen, Coles and Woolworths, not to the ones who deserve it - the overworked farmers.

I Much prefer self serve - especially when there are a lot of colds & flu lurking about. Its not a hard job & I'm an elderly person.
I am also an elderly person who has hated Coles forever so I never shop there. For starters, I'm not too fond of the layout of our local store or the way the staff treat us older people so I shop mainly at Aldi where I find the younger "shelf fillers are always eager to help or even chat & work at the same time which is unusual to see with today's youth.

Same as taking coins to the bank, they show you how to use the coin counting machine, I just say I don't work here.
This one I do have issues with. For decades I have collected coins in a real piggy bank. Periodically I would empty the piggy bank, bag up the coins into the respective bags and take them to the bank to change to notes. I don't miss the collected change but it is great to have 'free money' to spend on whatever or however I choose with no guilt! 😊 BUT since the tellers now refuse to have anything to do with customers at all, you can only change coins IF you have a bank account and you have to use the coin machines. Then to add insult, you cannot access that money from you account for at least 24 hours whilst the bank checks their machine has not credited you than it should have. I find this far more offensive and galling than a self service checkout at a supermarket!

I prefer a manned checkout! If they keep this up there will almost no jobs for people in their stores. I also hate it at Kmart. No one pays me to work there!!!
Better get used to it though. Woolworth has already moved this way and ALDI won't be far behind you can be sure. The next step, already in some shops is no checkout at all as such. You will scan your selections as you go round the store and when you have collected everything you want you will tap and go at the exit to pay for your shopping. They call it ' progress'!

I am lucky to have a full time job and I believe that everyone who wants a job should be able to get one . I drive a bus , so no self/drive , so I want to create jobs for other people also . I use the checkout 95% of the time unless I am buying 1/2 items . It's a cliche , but I do not work for the shops . They want me as a customer , so give me service , which comes with a smile and friendly conversation , and I will continue to shop there , or I WILL go elsewhere .
