Cobbler’s last

Ahh, the good old cobbler’s last! Do you remember those school days when you had to wear stiff and uncomfortable new shoes? But thanks to your dad’s trusty cobbler’s last, those shoes were transformed into something far more bearable to wear. He would add that extra sole and heel to your new school shoes and tack toe and heel caps to protect you from rough and tumble play. Have you ever used this old-school tool to repair your child’s or grandchild’s shoes or boots?

Our Dad used one to do all of our shoes with toe and heel plates. We only had one pair of school shoes and jandals when we were little as we were a family of 8 kids. Mum and dad emigrated from England after the war with 5 kids and had another 3 in NZ. I was 7th so most of my clothes were hand-me-downs. We didn’t have much as kids but we had a happy childhood. We lived in the country so played outside a lot.

Yes I have, I inherited one from my grandfather decades ago and still have it. It takes up a visible spot in the house now so we see it all the time but it has and sometimes still is used.

Still have ours. Back in the late 50’s My father used to replace the soles on my school shoes and put little plates in the sole at the toe part and heel to make the shoes last longer. I had leather shoes for school- weren’t allowed to wear sand shoes and of course sneakers didn’t exist then.

The photo of the Cobblers last brought tears to my eyes as i remembered the beautiful gentle giant who was my Dad and how he would "fix things" for us.
Thank you.
