Cloth nappies

Who remembers the days of cloth nappies and safety pins? Before disposable nappies, cloth nappies were the norm. Young mums today will never know the struggle of trying to fit a wriggly baby into a cloth nappy and attempting to fasten it with a safety pin making sure not to jab the baby in the process. It was a labour of love to rinse, soak, and wash them. Then you had to hang them out to dry, fold them up, and put them away. It was time-consuming and often frustrating, but it was worth it!

My two (b,g) had cloth nappies and only disposables on rare occasions. Bubs and Mum didn’t get stabbed with the deadened safety , only me….ouch!!!😢😢

We used them even though disposables were around when we had babies

Half the work involved in having a baby was keeping up with nappy washing, hanging out etc.
I enjoyed changing my grandchildren and just throwing away the disposable.
I know it creates more landfill, but it's so much easier.

Yes I remember the soaking and washing but no adverse reactions from my first baby.

Both my children wore cloth nappies too.
When youth today, say that we don’t do anything for the environment, I feel offended and that’s because our life was based on natural things.
We can start with cloth nappies, no plastic bags, only paper bags for everything. No milk, or any drinks in carton boxes or plastic bottles, no electronics like today, we could mention lots and lots of things.
It’s their generation that are doing the damage not the oldies. Do they stop traveling by plane, car or any other way of transports that release all the fumes?
They seem to know everything but they don’t. They are a generation of whingers and protesters. I’d like to see them living the same ways we lived, they wouldn’t last long 😩😩

Used them on all my children bar the youngest one and didn't use pins as I discovered a velcro wrap around that held the nappy in place. When youngest child was 16 days old I got an infection and was put onto oral, intravenous & suppository antibiotics for 7 days. Was breast feeding, developed thrush of the nipples, this caused thrush in son's mouth and groin area. After all this infection had cleared up, everytime I put a cloth nappy on my son, it was like his urine was so strong that it burnt his skin, so had to switch to Huggies disposables as they were the only nappies at that point that drew liquid away from the body.

Certainly do! I had twin daughters first up and disposables were not around - 48 nappies a day to wash, plus during the first summer since their birth we experienced a thrip plague, insects which are attracted to white for laying of their eggs. I had to iron all the nappies to rid them of the insects and eggs. Total nightmare! Not to mention using the horrible pins and the rashes that the cloth nappies caused - ugh, ugh, ugh! Disposables finally came on the market, but they were so expensive we could only afford to buy them when we went travelling. Thank goodness the cloth nappy days are long gone!! 😖😃

Weren't many wet wipes around then & they were too expensive. I used damp cotton face washers for my babies. No mobile phones. People had to wait until we got home to ring us or we ring them.

Being the 2nd eldest of seven, I remember cotton nappies all too well. Mostly hanging then on the clothes line. Like about twenty at a time.
