Classic Aussie Experience

If there are things Australia isn’t lacking, it’s sunshine and the big blue sea! This blast from the past was taken in 1978, and it shows the world-famous Bondi beach packed with swimmers out on a nice trip. I know, it’s quite cruel to share this with the creeping autumn chill, but you have to admit: it’s at this time of year when we miss the heat of the Aussie summer most, right?

Anyway, what’s your favourite beach memory growing up? Tell us all about it here!

Arriving in Sydney from England was exciting. The year was 1954 and together with my husband and two sons aged 4 and 5 we were all set to visit the wonderful Australian beaches promised. We were sent to Bunnerong Hostel in Matraville and it was from there that we had our very first experience of Sydney's wonderful sandy beaches. Each weekend we took our packed lunches and walked to the beach. It was a very happy period. My memories remain but none are more poignant than that very first visit.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing @Happy girl.! What was the feeling of that very first visit like? Did anything stand out to you?

P.S. hope the family's doing well! :D

As teenagers we used to go to Wattamalla in the Royal National Park, jump off the rocks and swim in the lagoon as the surf had a big rip and way too rough. We stay and have a bar-b-que up the top and play cricket before we headed home. Wonderful place
Good fun innocent happy times.

Ah, what a memory! Really the essence of 'the good old days'. I remember when I cared about nothing else during trips like you mentioned, @Nelbert --- just me and my cousins doing things our parents would scoff at (just childish things, of course!) had they known... Oh, and the food! Nothing special when you think about it, but the food was always so delicious. Maybe it was the company that made it special?

After the pebbles and rough beaches in England, the beautiful sandy beach was amazing and we were staggered that so few people were there enjoying it. Of course we found the weather fantastic, especially after rainy Manchester, and beach weekends became 'the norm'. The family, now including offspring of course, are all beach lovers.

Of course since then we have experienced a great deal of what the Australian inland has to offer. That's stunning too! Love it!

Oddly enough, I felt very happy at reading that all the kids grew up to love the beach
