Christmas Mince Pie Battle: Coles, Woolies, IGA

As the festive season approaches, you might already be stocking up on your favourite seasonal treats. One of our favourites here at the SDC is the classic mince pie. But, with so many options on the market, how do you know which is worth your money?

Well, that’s where member reviews come in. And, lucky for us, we knew just the man for the job!

Now, I’ll pass the reins over to member @Staffordshire Whippet.

Meet @Staffordshire Whippet

I am known to you all as @Staffordshire Whippet, having been in Facebook Gulag too many times under my official account for saying what I was actually thinking.

I am happy to report that I survived my last review about Meat Pies without upsetting either SDC or Meta, so here goes with my Christmas Mince Pies review.

This was a bigger challenge than last time due to the sheer number of entrants. We blind-taste-tested six varieties, calling in the assistance of our mate of 50+ years, Richard, who is visiting from Greater Sydney and who is verrrrrry fond of his tucker.

The three of us gave each sample a score out of 5, and our ratings for each represent a cumulative score out of 15.

They can all make there own mince pies and keep them my wife has been making them every year for the last 59 years, she jokingly told our daughter last year that there will not be any this year (2022) ha ha. My daughter jokingly told her that she will be standing behind her if that happens to make sure they are made.

My mums recipe is probably as old if not older than hers.beats crappy store bought ones and it’s not hard to make pastry.🌹
Sounds delicious! I've never tried making them from scratch, so it sounds like this is my sign to try If you fancy sharing your recipe, I'd love to share it in one of our December newsletters. But I understand if it's top secret! I'm not allowed to share my family's rum ball recipe 😂

Being an English lady I love my mince pies at Christmas and am drawn to the English brands, but to be honest it’s horses for courses, go with what you like and what suits your budget. Merry Christmas all. X

I personally can’t stand fruit mince pies. My mum used to make them as both she & my dad loved them. Dad had to put up with store bought ones when he was living with Ted & I. We all have different tastes so to everyone who likes them totally indulge & enjoy.

My husband loves those cheaper Coles ones, can't get enough of them.
