Check with your friends via phone if you get a strange request from them on your computer for Apple ITune cards

I consider myself a bit scam wary. I can usually spot a scam but yesterday I nearly got caught. I recently had breakfast with a few friends, so when I got this request from one of them I said yes to it. The scam said they had dropped their phone and it wasn't working so could I do them a favour and buy Apple ITunes card for a friends birthday. I said yes and said I would go and get them. I went down to the supermarket and bought the ITunes cards because I knew she had apple products. I came home and for some unknown reason (maybe thanks to Coles giving the scam watch pamphlet) to me before I did as the email asked I sent my friend a text. She replied straight away and said the email wasn't from her. She got onto Telstra and found out her email address had been hacked. So luckily for me even though I bought the ITune cards I could use them as I too have Apple products. I feel rather stupid but glad I hesitated otherwise I would have been out of pocket without being able to benefit from my stupidity. Take care friends

If your friend's phone wasn't working, how could you send her a text?

I got scammed out of $20,000 - I got an email offering good interest rate. I replied to Investorcentre.com.au for their Investor Centre product. NOw I can’t contact them. They don’t answer phone calls or Emails. All calls go to voicemail. I feel stupid and ripped off.

It was only after they read the scam pamphlet provided when purchased the iTunes card,

If anybody wants to borrow money from me, family or friend they will need give me something worth more than what they want to borrow as collateral. Once bitten twice shy!!

Indeed; 'tis a sad world we live in.

I wonder how they were going to get the iTunes cards from you 🙁

They said to open them and give them the codes. Once you do that they can use them. They most probably buy Apple products and sell them to get the money

I hope something can be done so you can get your money back

Anything that says cryptocurrency or gift cards I delete straightaway - a big red flag

Says she got a request, not a text…..Request would have been emailed I think :giggle:

Sorry that happened to you and have to live with the consequences….. If this is recent it won’t hurt to phone your bank though, I mean you never know…….You will have learned your lesson with that, but for everyone else please do some homework before you reply to any email or click on a link in an email…..it doesn’t take much time to check the name with Scamwatch first, or check the spelling in the email which is always a dead giveaway, if you recognise a known company please phone that company independently and not from any that’s in the email just to check the legitimacy of it……Please realise that in less time than it would take to check even one of these things, you will have already been scammed if you click that link……:(

It was via email saying they had dropped the phone and it didn't work

That's the point, regardless of what the email said, you get in touch with the person
