Car registration after cancellation in NSW
For those pensioners in NSW who are not required to pay a vehicle registration fee, please be aware that you do still need to register your vehicle with Services NSW. You need to pay for a Compulsory Third Party insurance ("green slip") and obtain a roadworthy inspection certificate ("pink slip"), then register your vehicle with Services NSW. You have the same 3-step process as everyone else in NSW, even though when you register the vehicle you do not need to pay a fee. If you do not register the vehicle, your insurance will be invalid. You will be driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. My friend's mother was caught out. She had paid for the CTP insurance and obtained a roadworthy certificate, believing that was all she needed to do because the registration did not require a fee. Not so! She was was shocked to be stopped by police and fined over $1,500 for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. She appealed the fine but it was a long process. Please be aware that registration is essential, even though you do not pay a fee.
