Campfire Damper
- Replies 0
Heading out camping and want to try making a traditional campfire damper? Well, you’re in luck! It’s cheap, simple and tasty!
Note: You’ll want to have a camp oven on hand. Don’t have one? Someone else at the campsite might!
Go camping regularly? Why not invest in your own like this $25 dutch oven from Anaconda?

Here’s how to make damper:
Ingredients
1 large cup of self-raising flour
Generous pinch of salt
1/4 cup water
Method
Add salt to flour.
Slowly add 1/4 of a cup of water (more and it will be as tough as an old boot).
Mix and form into a round loaf.
Dig a foot-deep hole near a fire and add 2 shovels of hot coals and ash.
Add damper mixture to a greased camp oven (traditional cast iron round pot with lid).
Cook for a maximum of 40 minutes. If undercooked it will be flat and rubbery.
If you’re cooking directly over a flame, it will take roughly half the time.
Your first try may be inedible. Keep trying, you'll soon be an expert.
This is making me crave a good camping trip! Do you have any trips planned? Even better, do you have any tips for a successful damper first try?
