Budget-friendly buy from Bunnings banishes flies like magic – “A true lifesaver!”

Flies are unarguably one of the most annoying pests in the world. Once these unwelcome visitors find a way into your house (and hopefully not into your mouth…), you’re left with no choice but to grit through the endless buzzing, swatting, and dilly-dallying about with your numerous attempts to obliterate them.

The good news is that one nifty woman came across an easy and inexpensive way to banish them completely – so tell those pesky flies to mutter their final prayers.

She took to a cleaning and organising group on Facebook to share images of a ‘magic’ $5.90 Bunnings item that not only kills normal house flies, but fruit flies and mosquitoes as well!

The Disposable Fly Trap from The Buzz features a fly attractant that supposedly only requires a few cups of water. However, this simple concoction doesn’t seem to be working as well as it should…

A shopper complained: “I don't know why but these traps did not work well at all. Lots of flies around but only caught one fly. Saw a fly go in and come back out again.”

So the woman devised a better, tried-and-tested way to get rid of flies quickly and all it took was creating her own ‘magical’ homemade liquid.

“Guys, I’ve found the magic potion!!” the woman wrote alongside a picture of flies in the yellow container. “Through lots of trial and error, I’ve stumbled upon the best mix that truly works to rid the house of flies and fruit flies!”

“I use this fly trap from Bunnings and just keep refilling it each week.”

The woman went on to explain that the flies in her home were “absolutely out of control” for a while, but the Bunnings product paired with her DIY potion “really works”.

“Even now, when we can’t even see them around, it will still trap quite a few.” she added.

To replicate the fly killing potion, simply combine two spoons of sugar, a few squirts of dish soap, and one-third (⅓) a cup of water.

“Guys, I’m telling you, this stuff is MAGIC,” she continued.

Her post has since garnered 400 ‘likes’ and dozens of comments, with several users expressing how eager they were to give her hack a shot.

“Definitely going to try this! The flies have taken over my house this year and nothing else is working to get rid of them.” one wrote.

“I’ll have to try it with your magic potion. I’ve tried the traps with a supplied potion but couldn’t stand the smell even away from the house,” another commented.

“Thank you very much. You’re a lifesaver & I’ll be using this,” a third added.

But several users raised concerns about the strong smell of the dead flies and the liquid.

“Line the inside of the bottle with a small freezer bag before you add anything.” one person suggested.

“Mix the ‘chemical/attractant’ inside the bag, screw the lid on and leave! When it needs replacing, undo the top, tie a knot in the bag and place the bag in the bin. Re-line the bottle with a fresh bag and go again.”

If you’re not willing to risk spending on a low-rated product (which we totally understand and would probably recommend you avoid doing), the SDC has plenty of other ways to get rid of flies that may pique your interest.

One mum claimed to eliminate the pests with a bag of water and some coins! Meanwhile, another woman used a mixture of water, red wine, and dish soap to target fruit flies.

This sounds pretty good and I might give it a try....I have lots little flies hanging about partying. one day they are there then voila they all seem to disappear only to return again. There is no way I would put the mixture it comes with anywhere close by it smells like dead skunks but I would give this mix a try.

Thankfully I have pets who hate flying insects even more than I do! My son's dog is a ferocious fly killer! He hates those 'sky raisins' with a passion 🤣

However, the best solution I've found is to grow lots of fly & mozzie deterrent plants around my external doors - I grow lemon grass, basil, mint, rosemary & pennyroyal in pots and rotate them regularly to keep them fresh smelling. Lavender is also a very effective deterrent but I grow it further away from the house because of the bees it attracts.

my dog hates every flying insect as well, but I try to keep her from killing them as I m worried about her being bitten/ stung in the mouth/ tongue and suffocate as a result....
