British expat’s scathing review of popular Aussie town has locals fuming

Over the years, the Sunshine Coast has become a popular destination for travellers from all over Australia and the world. With its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and relaxed lifestyle, it’s easy to see why it’s an appealing choice for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

But one recent overseas visitor has caused outrage among locals with her scathing review of the area.

A British woman, who goes by Glasbyj on TikTok, was left ‘shocked’ by the reality of living on the Sunshine Coast – famously one of the country’s most beloved areas.

She revealed in a video that she expected Queensland to be a ‘hot spot’ like Europe, but was saddened when she discovered that ‘no one wants to have fun’.

She’s lived in the area for around four years, and she hinted that she’ll be leaving soon so she shared a list of all the things she hates about it.

This upset hundreds of locals and fans of the area who were quick to leave scathing comments of their own. But some Aussies agreed with the woman, and described the area as a ‘retirement village’.

Glasbyj featured seven things she believes the area is lacking, and one pet peeve she has is that ‘everywhere is closed by 8 PM’.

She revealed that she hates how it’s ‘not acceptable to walk around in bikinis’, and complained how there was ‘no nightlife’, and restaurants close by 7 PM as well. She also berated the coast’s lack of ‘open sea boat trips’ and beach bars.

Also, she admitted that what she hates the most about it is that ‘no one wants to have fun’.

‘Time for the next adventure’, she captioned in her video.

Locals were furious and left harsh comments on her account.

‘I’ve lived here my whole life. Most people day drink, drive up the beach, and absolutely wear bikinis and no shoes everywhere, along the actual coast,’ said one person.

Another woman replied: ‘Where on the Sunshine Coast? Grew up there, bikinis and thongs absolutely accepted everywhere.’

‘Well goodbye, thanks for visiting,’ wrote another.

Another suggested that if she wanted something like ‘Europe’, then she should’ve gone to Europe instead.

However, some locals agreed with her, while some said she was on the ‘wrong coast’.

‘You picked the wrong coast - gold coast is young and happening,’ commented one.

Another one shared that when they moved there in the 90s, their mum ‘burst into tears’ when she found out that supermarkets closed at 5 PM on a weekend.

While another woman said that ‘compared to the rest of the world, Australia feels like a retirement home’. And added that it’s not fun for young people, but great for older adults.

Someone else explained that people there are early risers and that the cafes open as early as 6 AM.

When she finally retires (if she is lucky enough to get to that age) she will know of a good place to got to... LOL

I was only saying to some of my kids the other week how when I was young we never had Thursday night shopping, shops closed 12pm Saturdays and closed Sundays.

I loved going Thursday night shopping until the novelty wore off, now I hate Thursday night shopping.

I would love to now live where things shut early .

If you want to live in an area of 24 / 7 retail and late closing cafes / clubs then move closer to the city

Come to Central Queensland where almost everything closes, either early or completely, on Sunday. In fact Sunday trading only started here about 10 years ago!
