BIG W under fire for 'sexist' pricing

As we all know, the holiday season is just around the corner. And with that comes the yearly scramble to find thoughtful gifts for all our loved ones.

Thankfully, these days there are plenty of gift sets available at major retailers like BIG W, which make our holiday shopping a lot easier (and often less expensive) than it could be.

But one gift set in particular caught the eye of a savvy shopper recently—and not in a good way.

The woman snapped a photo of an identical pair of Tradie-branded body wash and drink bottle sets while she was doing her Christmas shopping at BIG W and noticed something very strange about their pricing.

Even though both sets appeared to include exactly the same products, the version marketed towards women was $4 more expensive than its male counterpart!

There aren't any discernible differences between the women-targeted version and the standard version, except for the gender-specific branding.

'In my local BIG W yesterday and came across these,' the shopper wrote in a now-viral Facebook post alongside two photos of the offending gift sets.

'Both exactly the same, just different prices.'

Needless to say, this did not sit well with shoppers. The image quickly racked up hundreds of comments from outraged customers who accused BIG W of 'sexism' and 'discrimination'.

Many also pointed out that this pricing discrepancy is what people refer to as 'the pink tax' – meaning that products marketed specifically towards women tend to cost more than those aimed at men (even when they're exactly the same!).

'It's called a pink tax, which in other words is called women's tax,' one woman wrote in the comments section. 'It's the reason I get men's razors and deodorant; same brand, same can, same razor etc. I first noticed it with clothes and toys for kids. Sexism at its finest.'

'Legit same sizing, just different colours, but $4 difference,' another chimed in. 'Pink tax. Woeful in 2022'

A representative from BIG W eventually commented on the situation, telling media outlets that the price difference was the result of a 'pricing error' that has since been fixed.

'Both sets should have been priced the same, and both products are now correctly priced at $14 each,' the spokesman said.
Key Takeaways

  • BIG W has come under fire for its 'sexist' pricing after a customer snapped a picture of identical products with different price tags.
  • The woman posted a picture of the Tradie gift packs, which include a drink bottle and body wash. Each bundle appears to contain the same items, but the one marketed to women cost an extra $4.
  • Shoppers on social media were outraged, with many blaming the 'pink tax'—the tendency for women's products to cost more than men's—for the price difference.
  • A representative for BIG W responded to the customer's concern, confirming the issue was an oversight in pricing that has since been corrected.
So there you have it, folks. If you're doing your Christmas shopping at BIG W (or any other retailers) any time soon, keep an eye out for any pricing discrepancies—and be sure to ask for a staff member if you think there are any price issues!

I buy men's trackies, hoodies and t-shirts because they're better made with longer lengths and avoid the pink tax. I have also become like a man in not wanting to buy new, because my stuff never wears out.

I have been buying School Kids Shoes and Sneakers .. Look at the kids today they are nearly 6inches taller and bigger feet AND have a look at the stylish cheap sneakers compared to Men's wear, and the price is again cheaper for the same items ... NOT ELEMENTRY DEAR WATSON ...

I bet that if the situation were reversed there would be no fuss.

I wonder how long the "pricing error" would have continued if the store had not been called out on it? ;)

I don't know how we ever existed without Jon & Maddie's idea to float such a fantastic idea as the SDC. It has grown like Topsy as you see new names daily writing in, & more names to the team also. No matter what our age, there is something for everybody. I am so proud to ring anyone I know to tell them to join the Club, simply because I have just learnt something that hasn't come through the telly or papers. I have come to totally rely on the Club now as recently I lost sight in one eye. I would be so miserable if
it comes to me being a non-reader. You see my eyes have been exceptional for every job I ever had. They were essential for close work & figures. The left one was always used more but I thank Our Lord I still have a spare.
I would like to thank publicly all the team who work so hard for us & wish one & all "A Merry Christmas" & an even better "New Year 2023."
