BIG W under fire for 'sexist' pricing
- Replies 5
As we all know, the holiday season is just around the corner. And with that comes the yearly scramble to find thoughtful gifts for all our loved ones.
Thankfully, these days there are plenty of gift sets available at major retailers like BIG W, which make our holiday shopping a lot easier (and often less expensive) than it could be.
But one gift set in particular caught the eye of a savvy shopper recently—and not in a good way.
The woman snapped a photo of an identical pair of Tradie-branded body wash and drink bottle sets while she was doing her Christmas shopping at BIG W and noticed something very strange about their pricing.
Even though both sets appeared to include exactly the same products, the version marketed towards women was $4 more expensive than its male counterpart!
There aren't any discernible differences between the women-targeted version and the standard version, except for the gender-specific branding.
'In my local BIG W yesterday and came across these,' the shopper wrote in a now-viral Facebook post alongside two photos of the offending gift sets.
'Both exactly the same, just different prices.'
Needless to say, this did not sit well with shoppers. The image quickly racked up hundreds of comments from outraged customers who accused BIG W of 'sexism' and 'discrimination'.
Many also pointed out that this pricing discrepancy is what people refer to as 'the pink tax' – meaning that products marketed specifically towards women tend to cost more than those aimed at men (even when they're exactly the same!).
'It's called a pink tax, which in other words is called women's tax,' one woman wrote in the comments section. 'It's the reason I get men's razors and deodorant; same brand, same can, same razor etc. I first noticed it with clothes and toys for kids. Sexism at its finest.'
'Legit same sizing, just different colours, but $4 difference,' another chimed in. 'Pink tax. Woeful in 2022'
A representative from BIG W eventually commented on the situation, telling media outlets that the price difference was the result of a 'pricing error' that has since been fixed.
'Both sets should have been priced the same, and both products are now correctly priced at $14 each,' the spokesman said.
So there you have it, folks. If you're doing your Christmas shopping at BIG W (or any other retailers) any time soon, keep an eye out for any pricing discrepancies—and be sure to ask for a staff member if you think there are any price issues!
