Big cash splash under the cost of living concession helps thousands of Australians

The rising cost of living is a problem that is affecting people of all ages, but it is perhaps pensioners who are feeling the squeeze the most. With fixed incomes and often limited savings, they are struggling to keep up with the ever-increasing prices of essentials like food and utility bills.

This has been the rationale of the South Australian government to distribute one-off cash payments to residents who are Centrelink recipients.

Around 192,000 South Australians will get up to $449 in cash directly into their bank accounts as part of a programme that was launched earlier this year in the state budget and is intended to help low-income earners and retirees who are struggling.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said that the payment was the largest state government financial aid ever made to those with low incomes and concession cards.

He remarked: 'With the rising cost of living pressures, inflation and an influx of interest rates, this payment could not come at a better time.'

'This one-off, doubled cost of living concession payment was what we promised – and we’re now delivering on it.'

Under the new concession plan, renters will receive a one-off cash payment of $224.60, while homeowners will receive $449.

Homeowner-occupiers who are self-funded retirees with a commonwealth seniors health card will also earn $224.60 per household.

The South Australian government pointed out that the cost of living concession is the replacement of the council rate concession, which was originally imposed to assist those on fixed or low incomes with their everyday living costs, including rent, utilities, and medical expenses.

So, how can you obtain the concession? Here are the guidelines:

You must reside at a property in South Australia
  • You must be a Centrelink recipient
  • You have an eligible card or meet low-income requirements
  • You must not reside with somebody who earns a higher income than you, unless you receive a Centrelink or Department of Veterans' Affairs allowance, or are the husband, domestic partner, or are a dependent of the high-earner individual

Anyone who submitted their application by July 1 should expect to receive the payment by the end of August.

Those who applied or are applying for Centrelink beyond July 1 can still receive the payments so long as they apply before December 31.

The following requirements are needed for the application:
  • Centrelink customer reference number
  • DVA file number
  • A copy of your most recent tax assessment

While we're grateful for any assistance we receive, it's important to note that one-off payments are often not enough to sustain a family or some individuals with special needs for an extended period of time. The rising cost of groceries is a long-term problem that needs a long-term solution.

We hope that our state and federal governments will work to find a way to make groceries more affordable for all families. In the meantime, we'll continue to welcome any assistance we can get.

Me too, we’ve had so much hate thrown at us during Covid and for some strange reason people seem too think we are held to ransom, when the exact opposite is true. We’ve just had another $400 put into our electricity accounts. I don’t have to worry about putting my Aircon on heat as I know how much it costs and I make a point of having money paid to my electricity through Centre Pay every fortnight and have just got my account and after my bill was paid I still have $550 in credit and yes we get a lot more help than most States.
what $400??

from what I understand pensioners in SA have very little in the way of concessions like other states. But surely would be better as a weekly/fortnightly rather than one off.

I remember a few years ago a politition in Tassy decided to try and live on the pension for 1 month. Well I know that he couldn’t and he swore that he would do something about it. Did he?……. Absolutely not!
Don’t trust em and wish we didn’t have to vote for em.

Yes, would have been better for a lot of people if you had mentioned in the headline:

"Big cash splash under the cost of living concession helps thousands of Australians living in SOUTH AUSTRALIA"

instead of giving false hope to the pensioners who are struggling and who live elsewhere.

Having lived in SA 5 years ago I can tell you, you are far better off in WA. We pensioners here get lots of govt concessions, water, council, licence, rego, etc, in SA we only got a couple of hundred dollar. We get somewhere that amount as well from Seniors.
Our concessions are every year, not a one off payment.
How generous of the SA govt - not!!!😫
Glad to live in WA😃
Well, what shadow were you living under. I live in SA and at 70 on a pension still learning about concessions I can receive. All the above you mention are available, which I receive, except for council rates which were replaced with "cost of living" payment. :)

Every time SA hits a headline for anything GOOD we get slammed by eastern states. Well suck it up!!

I'm glad that you now appear to be getting concessions.
I did say that it was several years ago that I lived there and at that time they did not have these concessions.
Yes we did get around $200 cost of living, but we receive this from WA Seniors along with 50%discount on our council rates, water etc. Free drivers licence and free public transport between 9am and 3pm on week days and all day on weekends.

I wished NSW would give us that. Pensioners here get . Free drivers licence...free fishing licence.... I think it works out about 10 % of land rates and we get to travel on public transport for $2.60 all day every day
