Best-Rated Supermarkets revealed: Discover ALDI, Coles, IGA, and Woolworths rankings in the latest result

Finding a good supermarket with affordable prices, a wide selection, and fresh produce can be an uphill battle. Especially when you’re on a fixed budget, quality and selection can be hard to come by.
Thankfully, help is at hand, as survey results by consumer feedback platform Canstar Blue have just been released.
With 5-star ratings across multiple categories, ALDI has secured the title of Australia's best-rated supermarket for fresh fruit and vegetables, as voted for by 2,722 Ausies who have purchased produce from the retailer in the past month.
ALDI scored 5 stars for Overall Satisfaction, Value for Money, Freshness of Produce, and Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section, while their Variety category scored 4 stars.
This impressive achievement was attributed to sourcing their products from homegrown Aussie farms and diligent inspections of their suppliers' fruits and vegetables—like using equipment to measure ‘sweetness’ and sugar levels and assessing the texture.
Matt Atley, ALDI Australia Group Director of Fruit and Vegetables, said: 'Our joint commitment to delivering the highest quality fruit and vegetables at low prices means our customers never have to compromise on getting fresh produce in their trolleys.'
It was a close race for second place. However, Woolworths narrowly edged past its competitor, Coles.
The supermarket earned a 5-star rating for Variety and Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section, along with 4 stars for Overall Satisfaction and Value for Money. Freshness of Produce, however, was rated at 3 stars.
Coles followed closely in third place, earning 4 stars in Overall Satisfaction, Value for Money, Variety, and Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section. Like Woolies, Coles also received a 3-star rating for Freshness of Produce.
And lastly, but definitely not least, came IGA, which achieved 5 stars for Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section, 4 stars for Freshness of Produce, and 3 stars in the other categories.
The rankings were released at the heels of a report where an Aussie farmer called out major supermarkets for their unrealistic standards.
In a viral video, the farmer claimed that retailers reject produce with even ‘one insect’ on it, putting a strain on local producers and contributing to excessive food waste.
Farmers Pick Co-Founder Josh Ball said in a statement, ‘Five to fifty per cent of any crop can get rejected because of the way it looks, either because of its size—it's too big or too small—or it has a blemish on it. The standards are primarily set on aesthetics.’
Additionally, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) previously reported that food waste across the country costs the economy $36.6 billion each year.
