Best-Rated Supermarkets revealed: Discover ALDI, Coles, IGA, and Woolworths rankings in the latest result

Finding a good supermarket with affordable prices, a wide selection, and fresh produce can be an uphill battle. Especially when you’re on a fixed budget, quality and selection can be hard to come by.

Thankfully, help is at hand, as survey results by consumer feedback platform Canstar Blue have just been released.

With 5-star ratings across multiple categories, ALDI has secured the title of Australia's best-rated supermarket for fresh fruit and vegetables, as voted for by 2,722 Ausies who have purchased produce from the retailer in the past month.

ALDI scored 5 stars for Overall Satisfaction, Value for Money, Freshness of Produce, and Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section, while their Variety category scored 4 stars.

This impressive achievement was attributed to sourcing their products from homegrown Aussie farms and diligent inspections of their suppliers' fruits and vegetables—like using equipment to measure ‘sweetness’ and sugar levels and assessing the texture.

Matt Atley, ALDI Australia Group Director of Fruit and Vegetables, said: 'Our joint commitment to delivering the highest quality fruit and vegetables at low prices means our customers never have to compromise on getting fresh produce in their trolleys.'

It was a close race for second place. However, Woolworths narrowly edged past its competitor, Coles.

The supermarket earned a 5-star rating for Variety and Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section, along with 4 stars for Overall Satisfaction and Value for Money. Freshness of Produce, however, was rated at 3 stars.

Coles followed closely in third place, earning 4 stars in Overall Satisfaction, Value for Money, Variety, and Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section. Like Woolies, Coles also received a 3-star rating for Freshness of Produce.

And lastly, but definitely not least, came IGA, which achieved 5 stars for Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section, 4 stars for Freshness of Produce, and 3 stars in the other categories.

The rankings were released at the heels of a report where an Aussie farmer called out major supermarkets for their unrealistic standards.

In a viral video, the farmer claimed that retailers reject produce with even ‘one insect’ on it, putting a strain on local producers and contributing to excessive food waste.

Farmers Pick Co-Founder Josh Ball said in a statement, ‘Five to fifty per cent of any crop can get rejected because of the way it looks, either because of its size—it's too big or too small—or it has a blemish on it. The standards are primarily set on aesthetics.’

Additionally, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) previously reported that food waste across the country costs the economy $36.6 billion each year.

Key Takeaways
  • ALDI has secured the title of Australia's best-rated supermarket for fresh fruit and vegetables, according to Canstar Blue.
  • ALDI received five-star ratings in several categories, including Overall Satisfaction and Freshness of Produce.
  • Woolworths came in second, while Coles secured the third spot, and IGA rounded out the rankings in Canstar Blue's report.
  • The report comes after a viral video showed a farmer criticising supermarkets for their unrealistic standards, which she argued leads to food waste.

I found Aldis fruit and veges were not up to scratch . During covid I found coles we’re always fresh if I shopped on a Tuesday, and now just buy at woolies or the fruit and veg shop at the back of woolies.

When I read "selection", I thought range and variety.

As far as my local stores go, Woolies Dandenong Junction wins hands down. Second are Woolies and Coles (both Dandenong Plaza) and Aldi a close third.

Stone motherless last is IGA. Their range wouldn't be better than a regional petrol station.

It's like so many 'surveyed' customers, who are they, I must have gone into 7 or 8 different Aldi stores but none of them would ever make 5 stars in any category. I guess it's alone the line of Melbourne being Australia's most liveable city, is based on the immediate proximity of the City of Melbourne, where all the infrastructure and facilities are focused. Best part of this story is the next subject is bagging Aldi for the sediment found in some milk bottles. Followed by a promotional story of the gadgets available at Aldi this week. Is this SDC following Murdoch media's idea of balance? Put up a couple of dozen good news articles and once the cheque has cleared 1 bad review ever so often ? Go figure.

All three get a one or 2 star rating from me... too expensive and the quality is sub-standard. Don't buy from any of them.

The fruit and veg shop at back of woolies, leaves a lot to be desired as far as display goes and can be a bit daunting as far as size, especially if you’re short. Prices are great though!

I agree w the farmer. So often I hv bought "rubbish" F&V frm Coles where cutting into the apple, pear, tomato results in awful floury contents, onions going brown inside, potatoes gone green in a week even though properly stored, and celery gone starchy. My Coles rarely provides F&V that is fine but a bit 'wonky', but if & when it does, it is bagged in plastic at 1kg and only 10-50 cents less than their Standard bags. I am single, I do not need or want heaps of these items - I want ENOUGH, and NOT encased in blasted plastic!
I LIKE small bananas. I loathe Coles/WOW one size only BS! The buyers for these enormous corporations have little or no understanding of what we want, and that is CHOICE! I choose to want smaller bananas, not gorilla sized ones. I do not want giant apples, I want normal size apples, and am fed up w buying flavourless hard strawberries with hard green-white tops and one or two tiny slushy furry ones at the bottom of container.

With the exception of potatoes - which I buy at Costco, I buy all of my fruit and veggies at Aldi and have always been happy with the quality and freshness of the products.
Years ago the manager at our w/w resigned as they had cut back on money in the f&v section. He said they were more interested in looking after the shareholders than customers. None of the the managers since come up to his expectations.

ALDI is first choice, spud shed has excellent veg and fruit. Coles would be next. I will never buy fruit at Woolies, bought fruit often, goes off very fast, next day with strawberries .

Prices are extortionate.....

Aldi, Woolies hasn't been bad, but I've found a local fruit and veg place which is open to the public but also supplies a lot of restaurants so has to be good quality.

And regarding fruit/veg which is not right shape etc. Woolies sell that as The Odd Bunch which they charge a bit less for.

Most don’t cater for singles, which is annoying.
