Bargain hunters baffled by a ‘terrifying old school’ gadget –can you guess what it is?

When you go to an op shop, chances are you'll find some one-of-a-kind items and even treasure hidden among the piles of clothes and knick-knacks. Expensive antiques, vintage clothing, unique shoes, you name it! As the saying goes, ‘one man's rubbish is another man's treasure.’

The feeling of finding a hidden gem in an op shop is unbeatable. But sometimes, you come across something that leaves you feeling baffled instead.

This is what happened to a shopper who found a ‘terrifying old school’ metal gadget in an op shop in Sydney that looks like something straight out of a horror movie.

Amy, the shopper who found it, posted a pictureon Facebook, asking if anyone knew what it was.

The gadget in question is a metal ornament with scissor-like handles and a serrated edge.

‘I saw this in the op shop today and am trying to work out what it's for because it looks like a torture device, hahaha. Does anyone know?’ she wrote in the Facebook group I Love To Op Shop.

The post quickly garnered dozens of responses, with people suggesting that it could be anything from a cigar cutter to a more risqué device like a sex toy.

‘It is a cigar end cutter,’ wrote one person.

‘Bottle opener for people with arthritis, maybe?’ commented another.

‘I think it’s a thread/yarn cutter - travelling crocheters and knitters use them where they can’t take scissors, e.g. on a flight!’ said one person.

‘It’s a pimple popper,’ commented another.

‘It's for champagne bottles,’ added a third.

But one commenter finally solved the mystery, revealing that it is, in fact, a harmless kitchen gadget–an egg cutter used to chop the top off from hard-boiled eggs.

‘It's an eggshell cutter,’ they said. ‘We had one when I was a child.’

Another added that it was used to ‘cut a boiled egg neatly when table manners were important.’

This is not the first time a shopper has found a bizarre item in an op shop. Just this year, another shopper found ashes inside a collectible ginger jar.

I thought I'd seen every kitchen gadget, but I hadn't seen that. Slicing the top off an egg is simple, or for children mashing it with your spoon and pick off the bits of shell works.
I was given a fancy egg timer when I was young. Eggs were a breakfast staple, occasionally with bacon.

I grew up with one of those. If we had visitors staying overnight, it was always brought out for soft boiled eggs "to act the big deal ha ha)' because the egg broke evenly without the yolk dribbling down the lower shell of the egg. On our own we used a KNIFE & had competitions to see which one of us had a clean cut. Ohhh as I grow older the more I like the 6 people who came up with "This Club." It is so nice to read things to temporarily forget & then gives you such a lift to wallow in great memories. Gee I'm going to miss all of you one day when I am called to the mansion up above. You'll recognise me for the one that writes too much.

I volunteer in a 2nd hand store and once found the skeleton remains of a dead mouse in a rodent catcher and somebody else found $6,000.00 in a clippy bag inside a plastic container in the freezer compartment of a fridge that was donated.
