Authorities issue warning over gastro symptoms as cases hit all-time high this year

As we navigate the tail end of a global pandemic, another health concern seems to be on the rise, and it's one that our community should be particularly vigilant about.

Gastroenteritis, commonly known as gastro, is seeing a worrying spike in cases across New South Wales, prompting health authorities to issue a stern public warning.

The recent surge in gastro cases has reached levels not seen in years, with NSW Health reporting a significant increase in emergency department visits.

In just one week, 2,700 individuals sought medical attention for symptoms associated with gastroenteritis.

This uptick in cases is largely attributed to two pathogens notorious for causing vomiting and diarrhoea: rotavirus and norovirus.

Rotavirus is known for its severe impact on young children, while norovirus is a frequent culprit behind outbreaks in residential aged care facilities, schools, and childcare centres.

With the new school term on the horizon, health authorities are on high alert, emphasising the importance of preventive measures to curb the spread of these highly infectious viruses.

‘The message to the community is clear–simple measures can help stop the spread of gastro,’ Keira Glasgow, the One Health director at NSW Health, said.

'Maintaining good hand hygiene and keeping children at home when they are unwell will give us a good chance to slow the spread.'

Symptoms to watch out for include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, headache, and muscle aches.

These can take up to three days to manifest and typically last one to two days, though in some cases, they may persist longer.

The viruses are transmitted through contact with the vomit or faeces of an infected person, making hygiene practices paramount.

For those visiting loved ones in aged care facilities, it's advised to avoid using the private toilets in their rooms to prevent cross-contamination.

If you're caring for a child or anyone with gastro symptoms, it's recommended to wear gloves and a mask when cleaning up bodily fluids, including vomit.

After changing nappies or assisting with bathroom use, hands should be thoroughly washed.

Contaminated surfaces should be cleaned immediately with hot soapy water, followed by disinfectant and bleach.

While the main treatment for gastro is rest and staying hydrated, it's important to seek medical attention if symptoms persist, especially for infants, individuals with compromised immune systems, and the elderly, who are at a higher risk of serious illness.

As well as can be expected thankyou Suzanne rose. Shoulder surgery for me on Oct. 24 th has slowed me right down & l am reliant on my better half a lot more. Thank goodness she is well & able to assist.

How are you & your family? Have had a good chuckle when reading about your family get togethers & the like. Never a dull moment for you it would appear.
My mum had shoulder surgery last year abd she said it was the best thing she has done.
Beforehand she couldn't even raise her arm slightly now she has pretty much full use of it.

I will keep you in my prayers 🙏 on the 24th that all goes well and you have a speedy recovery. Please keep us updated if you can.

There is never a dull moment in our house. We all gathered at my sons yesterday for a BBQ for my granddaughter's 16th.

I sat by the pool enjoying watching 11 of my grandkids playing together and they were all under 6 .

Remember fruit wash when you get home in vinager or bicarb than rinse dry. Always wash sanitize your as you get home before touching anything. Try not to use public toilet if you have to take pkt sanitize wet ones in your purse or pocket
Cod liver oil must have gone out of favour. My grandmother used to tell me all about it. 😜

Do you think the government would have done that lockdown and put our economy in the position it was put in.

Do you think the world would have gone into Lockdown?

Where’s the dead birds 🦅? ????
There are two reasons

Firstly The absence of feathered corpses may be to do with the large numbers of urban cats, rats, dogs and foxes, and the fact that there are plenty of carrion-eating bird species in cities - crows and gulls - which don't object to a spot of cannibalism.

Secondly , when birds are sick Birds go into hiding when they feel sick. That's their instinct, so they don't turn into lunch for something else.

It's a different story for those chicken 🐔 farmers

You need to get over it. It's in the past now. I've heard all about it, due to my brother working in the worldwide music business. My brother, his music associates, and artists have moved on.

As for the Covid vaccines. You need to practice what you preach. Do some research from reliable sources. Not public forums. The vaccines were never made to prevent people from getting Covid. The purpose of the vaccines for covid, were to reduce the symptoms of the virus if a person was to get infected. The chances of dying from covid complications without the protection of the vaccine is greatly increased.

That's true. My great grandmother used herbs because there weren't any antibiotics or other medications for illnesses just like my grandmother. As well as when my mother was young. Just because herbs are 'natural' doesn't mean they agree with everybody's body. Just like medications can do also.
In answer to your question .. no, I hate cloves with a passion, so I won't be swallowing those. But thanks for your tip.
