Eligibility

You can apply for an Australian Capital Territory Seniors Card if:

• You're over the age of 60
• You're a permanent resident of the ACT
• You work less than 20 hours per week in paid employment

Transport deals:

COTA ACT manages Seniors Cards in the ACT which are combined with Transport Canberra MyWay cards. One card allows for both discounted public transport and the Seniors Card discounts and services. With this MyWay card, concession fares apply at all times, with a weekday cap of $4.80. Off-peak fares between the hours of 9 AM and 4.30 PM, weekends, and public holidays are free.

Interstate Travel:

The ACT is the first jurisdiction to link with the NSW Opal Card. This gives you access to concessional fares in NSW.

When can I apply?

You can apply two months before your 60th birthday. Your card will be issued when you turn 60. More information about eligibility requirements can be found here.

How to apply?

You can now apply for an ACT Seniors Card through this handy web form. When completing an application form, you are required to provide proof of age and residency.

Acceptable forms of ID include:

• Medicare card
• Centrelink Healthcare card
• Centrelink Pensioner Concession card
• DVA Healthcare card

Acceptable forms of proof of age include:

• Driver’s Licence
• Birth Certificate or Extract
• Australian Passport

Fees:

There is no cost when applying for this card.

Vehicle Registration Discount:

Holders of ACT Seniors Cards are entitled to a 10% discount on registration.

To claim a Senior Cardholder concession on your vehicle's registration you can contact Access Canberra at 132 281. You will be required to confirm your details and provide your ACT Seniors Card number. You must present a current and valid ACT Seniors Card and primary proof of identity to an Access Canberra Service Centre or Shopfront. The concession can only be provided to the cardholder. A concession can only be applied to one light vehicle registration in the cardholder's name.

This means that you pay 10% less on the cost of the registration component but must pay the full fee for compulsory third-party insurance, road rescue fee, road safety contribution and short-term registration surcharge if applicable.

Seniors with gas or electric-powered vehicles are entitled to a 28% discount on registration.

What is the Seniors Card programme?

The ACT Seniors Card is part of an Australia-wide initiative jointly supported by the ACT Government and the Council on the Ageing (COTA ACT). Each state and territory has a Seniors Card Scheme and some reciprocal arrangements are in place for using your card in other states and the Northern Territory.

The scheme recognises the valuable contribution of older people in their local community.

The ACT Seniors Card is issued for free and provides access to savings on a range of goods and services provided by participating businesses. A combination of government and non-government businesses make up the 300 participating organisations that provide a number of benefits and discounts on a wide range of goods and services.

How do I update, replace, or cancel a card?

You'll need to call the Access Canberra Contact Centre to manage your ACT Seniors Card. Phone: 13 22 81.

Can I use my card interstate or overseas?

Each Australian state and territory has their own Seniors Card scheme, but some reciprocal arrangements are in place. Double-check with the business if they offer a discount for ACT Seniors Card holders before making a purchase.

Holders of the ACT Seniors Card have access to discounts and special offers on goods and services from some businesses involved in the New Zealand SuperGold Program (this does not include transport concessions).

Look for the "SuperGold Cards Welcome" stickers when travelling in New Zealand, and ask if they also accept the Seniors Card or Senior Savers Card. If a business does not offer discounts for Australian seniors, this will be noted on their website under 'exclusions'.
