Australia Post under fire for ‘lazy’ delivery attempt

We often find ourselves juggling more responsibilities and struggling to manage our time effectively. This can make running errands a stressful and overwhelming experience.

Luckily, the rise of online shopping and delivery services has made our lives much easier by allowing us to avoid crowded stores and long lines.

One delivery service that has become a go-to for many Australians is Australia Post. With their speedy service, we trust them to safely deliver our important packages.

However, not all experiences with the company are positive.

Recently, a business owner in Newcastle, NSW, shared a video on social media capturing an alarming moment when an Australia Post worker appeared to make a half-hearted attempt at a delivery.

In the footage, we see the postie quickly pull up to the business, grab the package from the back, scan it, jot down a collection card, and return the package to the storage box - all in just 90 seconds!

The frustrated customer took to social media to express their disappointment, saying, 'This is apparently Australia Post's idea of attempting to deliver a registered post item.'

To make matters worse, the customer was in their office at the time of the attempted delivery, with a big 'open' sign displayed in the window. The postie could have easily gone to the door and knocked, and the customer would have been more than happy to receive the package personally.

The video of the Australia Post worker's half-hearted delivery attempt has sparked a wave of outrage among Facebook users. Many have encouraged the customer to file a complaint with AusPost, with one person saying the incident made their 'blood boil'.

Another user sarcastically commented that the postie looked 'quite keen and motivated', while others noted that it would have been quicker for him to simply knock on the door rather than go through the motions of filling out a collection card.

Sadly, this is not an isolated incident, and many others have shared their own frustrating experiences with delivery delays and package mix-ups.

One user shared that they currently have a package en route from Tamworth to Newcastle that has been to Queensland and Perth and back again.

Why do Australia Post workers often leave collection cards, instead of properly delivering the parcel?

The frustrating issue of Australia Post workers leaving collection cards instead of delivering parcels has been revealed to have a deeper underlying cause. According to a former delivery driver who spoke to a news source, the problem lies in the way contractors are paid.

While corporate Australia Post workers are paid an hourly rate, contractors are paid per parcel. This means that they are incentivised to deliver as many parcels as possible or leave collection cards, rather than taking the time to ensure successful deliveries.

In fact, the former driver revealed that he was paid just $1.50 per package during his time as a contractor in Melbourne.

While obstacles such as high fences and off-leash dogs may contribute to some missed deliveries, it's clear that the pay structure for contractors is a significant factor.

Until this underlying issue is addressed, it's likely that customers will continue to experience frustrations with unreliable and inconsistent delivery services.

Australia Post has responded to the Newcastle delivery incident, acknowledging that the delivery driver failed to meet their standards. A spokesperson for the company told Yahoo News Australia that they take immediate steps to address any deliveries that do not meet their expectations.

The company has strict protocols in place for items such as registered mail, and they encourage customers to contact them directly about any delivery issues. They have apologised to the customer for any inconvenience caused and are looking into the matter.

It's reassuring to see that Australia Post is taking the issue seriously and is committed to ensuring high standards of service for all customers.

Let's hope that the company's efforts to address the underlying issues with its delivery services will lead to improved experiences for customers across the country.

I recall when I was a kid growing up in a country town in the mid north of SA, there were two postal deliveries on weekdays. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. There was also a postal delivery on Saturday mornings and at Christmas time, one on Sundays as well. The postie would be on a push bike and would blow a whistle when he delivered the mail to the letterbox. Parcels were delivered by a delivery boy on a bike as well but in addition to the postal delivery. Large parcels were either delivered via a van or could be collected from either the Post Office or Railway Station depending on the size of the parcel. Things have certainly changed in the last 60 years. Sadly some changes have not been for the better.

I live in a block of apartments. When anyone rings the doorbell for my unit my phone rings.... I never get a "missed call" on my phone but I get "missed delivery" cards in my post box. These are registered items and NO ATTEMPT is made to deliver! When I go to the post office to pick up the item I mention it to the counter staff and get a stony silence in response. Most of the time I'm in my unit too :(

Yes, I live in the country and our postie is great, however AusPost themselves are absolute crap.
I waited over 3 weeks for them to deliver a parcel from their depot some 1-1/2 hours away, with constant excuses about floods and rail delays
Only trouble being there is no rail service here and there had been no floods in WA.
Also paid express delivery for my granddaughters birthday present to be delivered, it took10 days, I could have driven there in 3 hours.
Service not!!!
AND on ABC this week earlier they reported that AustPost was not making a satisfactory income and may consider closing Aust Post completely ... That would mean that postal services would be privatised Australia Wide..
Is it any wonder that they are not making ends meet with the crap staff they are employing and I would think that they are paying the most minimal wage that anyone could imagine ... SO WHY ARE THEY LOSING INCOME ?? Surely, we don't have to be Einstein to be able to work that out....

Yes cab relate to the postie or shoukd it be courier experience.
Bought item from eBay, which said item was undeliverable and had been taken to my nominated post office.
Had no card left but fortunately Had the eBay tracking number, so over to the Aust Post app and put in the tracking number sure enough it's waiting down the road.
My worst experience though, I have the Kilburn North post office as my nominated post office, it's a mile (1.6km) at the shopping centre and is very conveniently open til 4pm on Sat. Every few months the postie will take it to the Kilburn Post Office, which is technically 300m closer but east not west and not at a shopping centre and only until midday on Sat.
So then it's a special trip just to collect the item. Frustrating when you do exactly what Aust Post want and set up a nominated post office.
Could be worse! :)

Thanks for all the time and effort going into the newsletters.
I'm really enjoying them.
I'm a newb. Only recently 60 and still working full time but beginning to look at that light at the end of the tunnel.
Now if we can just get the inflation genie back in the bottle we might all be able to afford to live in retirement!

Regards

Dean

YES! I live on a back block, so the postie needs to walk about 100 metres to my front garden. Time and time again, but NB, especially in the last 2 years, they have thumped the package down in the shrubs and grass near the front post box I cannot lift cartons, eg of wine, so they are sometimes out there for 3 (three) days before someone drops by who can help me with them. It is HUGELY frustrating!

It happens all the time, notifications, saying parcel is on its way, wait all day, to find a card in the box, to collect at post office, no knock on the door or bell rung, if I didn't have a car, I would find it very difficult to get to the post office, because it is 20 mins by car. What's the point of having something delivered, when you have to pick it up anyway. Post office deliveries are a joke, gone are the days when the postie was part of the neighbourhood, and always on time, with a friendly greeting.

As far as the Postal Service is concerned it pays to live rural and have the postie live in the same village. He was a much loved and treasured member of the community. If you were going to be away from home you just told him and he held your mail for you. If he heard you were poorly it was not unknown for him to bring a loaf of bread or bottle of milk to help you out. If you were out when he tried to deliver a parcel he wouldn't just take it to the post office, he would try again on his way home from work. :)
Those days are long gone, I can remember as a kid 50 plus years ago in Chester hill NSW 2 mail deliveries a day 1 on Saturday Roger rode a pushie, was our local soccer coach and all round good guy as you said, looked after the community

I have had a couple of occasions where I have been home yet the Postie has not tried ringing the door bell nor has a card card been left in the mail box then I get a TX letting me know there is a parcel at my Local post Office waiting to be collected which has been there a couple of days. !
On the other hand I have had a Card secured to my security door letting me know there is a parcel for me which I could pick up after 4. P.M. at my local P.O. Some you win & some you lose.

I live at Peakhurst and got my parcels delivered as such, Until about a year ago they got a new postal contractor, and when I knew I was getting a parcel I would leave the front door open. When this new contractor got to my house instead of delivering he carded me every time requiring me to travel 3 km to pick it up from the post office and 3km home which took me an hour as I do not drive. This happened at least 6 times even though I pay a premium for delivery. From then on I addressed my mail as Riverwood and always got it delivered to to my door. I am done with bloody lazy postal contractors.

Australia Post have an absolutely abysmal delivery system these days, with most items sitting for a considerably unacceptable duration in processing centres across the country until they finally decide to get them back into the delivery process, often up to 10 days later. Its not acceptable but what option do we have as customers, when they are often the go-to deliverer because of their cheaper rates. However, cheap is more often nastier than not and worse than many!

I live in Keillor East and this has been an ongoing problem for a long time. I spoke with guy at PO last week when a parcel was taken there even though I was home all day. He mentioned that he had spoken with the delivery driver as he had several people say they were home and no one knocked or rang doorbell and was told it takes too long if I ring the doorbell. Can’t work out that logic as it would take just as long if not longer to write out delivery card.
Someone should be accountable. I live very close to PO and often think it’s an easy way out for the driver.

With the advent of electronic communication, AusPost are really struggling to maintain a satisfactory service on a shoe-string income.
Most of the complaints seem to be with lazy or careless individual delivery people and Auspost have a big task following up on all the complaints as well as maintaining a good delivery service and fair staffing issues.
Let's be patient and do our best to support our struggling Post Office.

I don't have any problems with posties in my area, or deliveries? it must be unique.

Unfortunately, I too find their service unsatisfactory. For example, just a fortnight ago, I had to waste my time and petrol driving to the post office to pick up a package after finding a card in my letterbox stating they tried to deliver and nobody was home. Which was utter nonsense. I was home the entire day, working on the computer, less than six feet from the front door. I have a heavy iron door-knocker but they did not knock. I also have a doorbell that rings both at the front and back doors, but they did not ring. When I tried to register a (polite) complaint at the post office, they were unhelpful and clearly could not care less. And yet the Australian Financial Review tells us on 3 November 2022 that "Australia Post's chief executive, Paul Graham, who took home a $2.09 million package that included a base salary of $1.15 million and a bonus of $885,022". Outrageous!

I don't for one moment buy into the argument that it's quicker for the contractor to fill in a card rather than walk the few steps to deliver a parcel. With a 23 digit barcode and the remainder of the information required, the only way that would be quicker is if the cards were filled in before the contractor leaves the collection area and he just stuck the card in the recipient's letterbox

I had an interesting experience with a parcel non - delivery yesterday (30th March). I received an sms message at 8:40 am telling me that my delivery was at the local Post Office, 2km away. As I had to go out anyway, I collected a parcel small enough to fit through the slot in my letterbox at 9:00 am

When I returned home shortly afterwards, I found the dreaded "You Have Mail" red card in my letter box, stating that I could collect it after 10:00 am. Something made me read the card in it's entirety and I discovered that the notification was for the very item I had collected from the post office some 45 or so minutes earlier

So, the postman or whatever they are called these days gave me notification that he/she couldn't deliver a parcel I had already collected because there was no one home

The height of dishonesty ? Some proof to my theory in the first paragraph ?

Yes, you would think that delivering the package would be just as easy, if not easier, than filling out the notification card. But experience would suggest that is not so. Furthermore, as a result of my experience above, I tried to file an online complaint but found that I could not do so without citing the barcode. But I could not provide it because the barcode on the card they left me was just an illegible scrawl that defied deciphering.
