Australia Post confirmed to 7NEWS.com.au that if an item cannot be delivered and it cannot be returned to the sender, it is sent to a Mail Redistribution Centre where it will be retained for a two-month period.

The postal service also said that items that remain unclaimed after the two-month period were then auctioned off on an 'as is, where is' basis which means that the items will be sold in their current condition regardless of any faults or damage.

All proceeds go to charity, according to Australia Post.

The postal service also said that in any instance that a customer recognises a lost item listed in the auction, the customer is encouraged to contact them.

Australia Post told 7NEWS.com.au: “Our National Customer Contact Centre will work with the customer and if proof of ownership can be established, the item is withdrawn from the auction and returned."

“Our first priority is always to ensure all mail is delivered to its intended recipient, and we strongly encourage customers to make sure that items are sent with the correct recipient and sender addresses.”

If you're looking to shop for Christmas, maybe you might want to check out the items for auction. These could be great Christmas gifts to grab with 100% of proceeds going to charity.
