Aussie woman shares $148.50 bill shock after visiting local mechanic

The digital age is often lauded for its convenience.

However, these quick transactions often come with a price.

A woman's recent visit to her local mechanic reflected the public's sentiment about card payments, particularly towards surcharges.

Adelaide local Wendy Armitage was about to settle a $900 bill for car repairs through the tap-and-go payment method.

However, she noticed a sign that almost left her out of pocket.

The sign indicated a staggering 16.5 per cent surcharge for using contactless payment.

For her $900 bill, Ms Armitage could have paid an additional $148.50 for surcharges alone.

'I was quite shocked, to be honest,' Ms Armitage shared.

Yet, Ms Armitage's quick thinking saved her a small fortune.

After confirming the surcharge with the owner, she opted to insert her card instead, which incurred a mere 30-cent charge.

'I saved myself quite a lot of money to dine out on,' she said, relieved.

Ms Armitage's experience shed light on a broader issue affecting Australians nationwide.

According to The Reserve Bank of Australia, Aussies pay almost $1 billion in card surcharges annually.

This staggering figure highlighted the impact of these fees on consumers' wallets.

The Albanese government took note of the data and has considered a ban on debit card surcharges.

The proposed ban could start by January 2026.

The Reserve Bank still has to review the proposed ban as it examines the costs merchants face from card payments and the surcharging arrangements.

Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones expressed concern for both consumers and small businesses.

'We don't want the small businesses to be the meat in the sandwich here,' Treasurer Jones shared.

While some businesses may apply surcharges beyond the costs levied by banks, the blame should not solely lie on them.

Australian Banking Association Head Anna Bligh pointed out that many businesses surcharge over and above what they're allowed to do.

Inserting a card into an EFTPOS machine should typically cost less than 0.5 per cent for every transaction.

Meanwhile, contactless Visa and Mastercard payments could range from 0.5 to 1.5 per cent, depending on the card type.

A $100 purchase could incur an average additional cost of 28 cents for the EFTPOS, 52 cents for Mastercard, 47 cents for Visa, and a whopping $1.88 for Square, a digital payment provider.

While larger companies often absorb these costs, smaller businesses could pass these costs on to customers.

So, what can you do to avoid being caught off guard by such fees?

Always check for any surcharge notices before making a payment.

Consider other payment methods, including cash, and always ask the merchant about the best way to pay to avoid unnecessary charges.

The ban on card surcharges, especially debit card surcharges should start now, not wait until maybe 2026.
I always ask before making a card payment if there is a surcharge if I tap or a surcharge for using a debit card.
Luckily that person was savvy enough to notice the 16.5% surcharge.
That surely is a case of racketeering by either of the business or the eftpos machine provider?
Maybe the poster should contact ACCC because I’m sure they’d be interested in that exorbitant surcharge.
From the ACCC website:
Businesses can charge a surcharge for paying by card, but the surcharge must not be more than what it costs the business to use that payment type.

These fees are not for using your card. If you swipe and enter your pin, you won't be charged these extra payments.

It's only when you chose Tap n GO.

Were you aware that a lot of shops, including Aldi, charge this extra fee when you choose to tap rather than swipe 💳 😉

I can’t help but think, this is illegal. I understand small businesses charge an extra 15c or 25c to cover the fee they incur for our convenience. However this business is next level and this business should bring it to customers attention before they tap and go these illegal charges. It’s just lucky Wendy noticed,I’m not sure I would have. Find another mechanic

I was under the impression that it was illegal for businesses to charge more than they are being charged by their bank .
This mechanic should be reported for such exhorbitant fees and made to compensate any clients who have paid this charge and then be hit with a similarly exhorbitant fine.
Highway robbery.

I know that I have mentioned it before. DON'T tap and go, insert and pin.

"The Albanese government took note of the data and has considered a ban on debit card surcharges.

The Albosleazy govmint has CONSIDERED a ban. That's all it'll do. The surcharge ban should have started with his taking over and mismanagement of this country.
I wonder if these surcharches are what is paying for his 4mil home on the NSW Central coast.

and some banks will take off the tape and go so you do have to insert the card and some banks won't take it off. so if all banks gave us that chose then it is up to you the if you want to pay that fee. My bank doesn't offer that I have to have the tap and go but my friend she had it taken off her card because her bank offered that service. but if you insert your card and tap cheque you don't get charged any fees so just ask you bank what they offer then you make your own mind up how you pay

Yes I believe the ACCC has rules on this & max surcharge allowed is around 1.5%. I would report it.

Utterly ridiculous that this ban won't start until 2026 why ???

Is our government so inefficient that it takes them so long to do such a simple thing.

I have no time for Albo, but I don't understand the criticism regarding the purchase of his property. Surely he is entitled to purchase any property he desires, the same as anyone else

People carrying on about the house shortage and how he shouldn't have bought this property.
Your average Joe would not be in the market for a $4mil home so it's not really making any difference to the housing supply.
Instead, here in WA, something should be done about the properties continually being purchased by interstate investors and pushing prices up to eastern states prices and keeping WA residents out of the market.
You can't just go and offer to buy a property now as most agents push properties to online auction where they often go in excess of $100k over asking price. That's something to complain about.

The mechanic which Wendy used was one that she had confidence in. At times, it's very hard & fraught with danger in one where you have no trust in at all., or, don't know about.

In the "Small" compacted area where we are, there are 6 mechanical workshops. If any of 'em ripped customers off & did a bad job, they'd be soon out of business, quick smart, &, quicker than saying, "Jack Robinson". Luckily for us, they all do a good job.

Re my previous, I should have said, "She may have had confidence in", &, not, "Had confidence in".

His third house l believe

Why are people worried about how many houses Albo does or doesn't have. It's nobody's business but his own
There are plenty of people out there with a lot more.

I'm more worried about him flitting around the world instead of getting his act together and sorting out the economy, banks, rorting by big supermarkets, astronomical insurance, utility costs, etc. etc. etc.
It doesn't matter who we vote in we still end up with a raw deal.

I was under the impression that years ago already maximum permitted charges were introduced on card transactions ???

I have dealt in property for many years and, at least here in WA, it is more interstate investors who are pushing house prices up.
A large percentage of immigrants are not in a financial position to even be thinking about buying property, although they do, I admit, add to the problem of rental shortages.
