Aussie tips $5,000, leaves humble takeaway owner speechless

In a world where viral videos often feature pranks, drama, or the latest dance challenge, it’s refreshing to see a story that truly warms the heart and reminds us of the power of kindness.

Especially when it’s directed at the hardworking small business owners who are the backbone of our communities.

That’s exactly what happened recently in Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Waterloo.

A humble takeaway shop owner known affectionately as 'Chicken George' was left utterly speechless after receiving a life-changing $5,000 tip from popular Aussie social media influencer Spanian (real name Anthony Lees).

Spanian, a reformed criminal turned social media sensation, has built a massive following with his candid vlogs and music, often shining a spotlight on the real stories and struggles of everyday Aussies.

In one of his latest 'food hunt' challenges, he set out to find the best burger and chips in Sydney, visiting three classic takeaway joints: Sunny’s Takeaway in Chifley, Daily Fresh lunch bar in Alexandria, and the now-famous milk bar in Waterloo.

Determined to get an authentic experience, Spanian did not tip off the staff about his identity or intentions.

After sampling the fare at each spot, he declared Chicken George’s burger the clear winner.

But it wasn’t just the food that impressed him—it was the owner’s warmth, fair prices, and genuine friendliness.

Returning to the run-down milk bar, Spanian approached George with a simple compliment:

'You’ve got very good burgers, very good prices and you’re very friendly.'

Then, to George’s astonishment, Spanian began counting out $100 bills, leaving a $5,000 tip on the counter.

George, overwhelmed and clearly moved, protested:

'No, you don’t have to... I didn’t expect this.' But Spanian insisted, leaving the cash behind and slipping out before George could return it.

The touching moment was captured on video and quickly went viral, racking up over half a million views and landing on YouTube’s trending list.

Viewers poured in comments, moved by George’s humility and Spanian’s generosity.

The story didn’t end there. Just days after the video was posted, Spanian returned to the Waterloo shop to find it bustling with new customers—many of whom had seen the video and wanted to support George’s business.

'The shop is full of people who all came because of me,' Spanian remarked, noting that even businessmen in suits were lining up for a taste of George’s famous burgers.

Locals and fans alike shared their own stories of George’s kindness, with one commenter recalling, 'That shop owner was always nice and kind. Would often give food to people or not worry if people had the exact amount.'

Another added, 'That man was well deserving. Him refusing the money even if he may have needed it was so humbling.'

Spanian’s act of kindness is a powerful reminder of the impact we can have on our local communities—especially when we support small businesses and the people behind them.

In a time when many family-run shops are struggling to stay afloat, a little recognition and generosity can go a long way.

It’s also a testament to the ripple effect of good deeds. Not only did George receive a much-needed financial boost, but the viral video brought in a wave of new customers, five-star reviews, and a renewed sense of community spirit.

Loved watching that, thank you. For a one-man band, pleasant and humble - he definitely deserved it! Well Done!
I have watched many of Spanian's documentaries on Australia's most notorious and dangerous suburbs, some of which I have lived in and frequented regularly. Raw and real. No Hollywood fantasy production or staged David Attenborough stunts.

Like me, he tells it like it is - no pussyfooting, sugar coating or bullshit. Except I don't have a single tattoo.

The one thing I miss is the corner hamburger/fish & chip shop. What I wouldn't give to have an old fashioned hamburger instead of the cardboard offerings now from franchise shops. (mouth watering just remembering the taste of one).

When I was teen we had a Chinese man who had a fish and chip shop we always gave him a tip of 10c now back in 1970 10c wasn't nothing at the start he didn't want to take it he really made the best fish and chips
