Aussie neighbour goes viral with note shaming a garden - 'You should be ashamed'

We’ve all had to deal with a difficult neighbour at some stage or another. Maybe they blast their music loud late at night or leave their rubbish bins out on the footpath days after collection day.

Or maybe, like one unlucky Aussie bloke, they criticise your garden for being overgrown, even though you’ve been away for six weeks…

Alistair from Mandurah in Western Australia recently returned home from a big holiday to find an angry note taped to his front door from an annoyed neighbour. And boy, were they cranky.

‘Your Garden is a disgrace!’ the neighbour's note read.

‘You should be ashamed. The previous owners kept it immaculate. It devalues your property and the values of properties in surrounding areas.’

Luckily, Alistair saw the humour in it all and called the note a ‘love note’ when he posted a photo of the letter onto his local Facebook group. But it seems, Alistair was one of the few people who saw the humour in the note.

‘How did they know their neighbour wasn’t in hospital or something, what?? How rude,’ one person said in reaction to the post. There were multiple comments from other people saying they would never tolerate such a note and went on to explain what they would do if they were in Alistair’s position.

‘Let it grow a little first just so the weeds can spread their wings,’ one said.

Another said they would park three wrecked cars out on their lawn and keep them there for 20 years.

Another explained that they would laminate the note and put it out on display for everyone to read and they would not clean their garden up in any hurry.

So what would you do if you were in this situation, members? Or do you think the neighbour has every right to complain about Alistair’s garden? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this one!

there is a downside to this, unless the three wrecked cars are still licensed and roadworthy, there would be no reason to entice the police to remove them.

Must admit having previously lived in Mandurah myself and being pretty house/garden proud myself, there are some pretty atrocious gardens there and it is right that these places do decrease the value of the homes around them.
Nonetheless I would never have taken it upon myself to write such a letter, although we did once have to pay storage for a whole pile of old cars and accumulated junk on a neighbours property just so we could sell our own home!!! Some people just don't care, and there is really not much you can do about it.
It is disappointing though when you keep your place looking nice and the neighbours place looks like Steptoe &Son.

I love Alistair’s reaction! He had nothing to be ashamed of given he was away. I believe the neighbour may have been looking for an argument but Alistair’s reaction prevented that. Well done Alistair!

If he was a true neighbour he’d know they were on holiday !!! I’ve mown our neighbours lawn 3 times as they’ve just moved from an apartment to a house with a garden and don’t have a lawnmower . It doesn’t take long to be a real neighbour !

I have a story about an overgrown yard that will put most in the shade. In April 2012, my husband and I bought a house at auction. The typical worst house (by a long way) in an otherwise lovely street. Great block, sea views and lovely neighbours. It was seriously neglected and had been foreclosed on by the bank.

Before the house could be put on the market, a firm was brought in to clean up the back yard. The guys who did the job were telling us about it after the sale. Apparently, they arrived with brushcutters, mowers etc, but quickly realised they needed a backhoe. The entire back yard was covered by morning glory vines up to the level of the fence tops.

They got busy with the heavy equipment and were staggered to discover an above ground pool! It had been completely hidden by the vines. It was empty, having burst some years before, discharging several hundred litres of filthy brown water into the house behind, which was lower.

It was a major renovation, but we made a lot of money when we sold it.

Many yrs ago my friend who was a single mum on Centrelink had a neighbour that objected to her moving into the house behind her which had been bought by the Department of Housing. She had even started a petition prior to them moving in to try and stop it from happening. When that didn't work she went out of her way to make their lives a living hell. She made her first complaint to the Housing within a week of them moving in (boxes which had been flat packed and stored under the house which were being disposed of fortnightly in the recycling bin) and then it was just ongoing for the next 9yrs. My friend even agreed to attend a neighbour dispute resolution session which could have lasted up to 8hrs even though she had a 6wk old baby at the time that she was breastfeeding. The neighbour refused to attend. It all came to a head when she made a complaint about the friends daughters 21st birthday party a week before it was held. That was when Housing told her that if she continued to make petty complaints they would take legal action to stop the harassment of their tenant. She suddenly saw the era of her ways, finally pulled her head in and apoligised for all the trouble she had caused over the yrs. The friend is still living there (over 30yrs now) and the neighbour sold up and moved 15yrs ago.
