Aussie bullied online for criticising a racy advert – which side are YOU on?

If you're looking to engage in a fiery debate to blow off some steam, there’s no better place to go than the internet – where every move you make and every opinion you share is bound to send someone raging.

One woman from Darwin has become the apparent target of the week after slamming a suggestive ad displayed at a shopping mall in the Northern Territory.

She shared a video on Facebook, shaming Bras N Things for using ‘erotic’ images to sell their products.

‘You should be ashamed of yourself, Bras and Things!’ she can be heard saying in the video.

‘Children are watching this. They can walk past and see this filth.’

The video then flashes the digital advertisement, switching between images of women wearing different types of underwear. The local woman argued that the ads were exposing children to ‘sexualised images’.

‘Might as well have strippers on the billboard. What really is the difference in this ad?’ she wrote.

The woman then suggested that ads should only be visible from inside the store.

‘My main concern is children easily being able to see these sexualised erotic images.’ continued.

‘We, as a society, must protect children and not normalise and promote any pornography, sexual, or erotic images.’

She added feeling ‘disgusted’ that the shopping centre allowed such advertising all the while claiming to be a ‘family-friendly’ venue.

A spokeswoman for Gateway Shopping Centre responded to the complaint, saying that the ad ‘was undertaken by the store for the store’.

‘We take our duty of care very seriously.’ the spokeswoman stated.

‘If we did receive a complaint, our first action would be to contact the retailer.’

The woman’s Facebook video captured the attention of hundreds after it was shared on a local Facebook page and the notorious ‘Darwin – Have a Whinge’ page.

While a few did sympathise with the woman’s concerns, many were quick to deem her as a ‘Karen’.

‘Goodness, another “Karen”. Have you been to the swimming pools or the beach? Get over yourself!’ one person sneered.

‘Imagine being this upset by a bum.’ another local chimed.

‘A bra and knickers shop advertising knickers… Outrageous!’ a third cheekily wrote.

Despite being told to ‘calm down’ and ‘get a life’, the woman remains unbothered by the brutal comments.

‘I’ve developed a thick skin.’ she said.

‘They don’t phase me. I know many people would agree with me but refuse to engage online for their own reasons. I’m proud of my morals and values.’

This isn’t the first time a lingerie store was involved in controversy. Previously, a Perth shopping centre faced massive backlash for hosting a children’s activity near the lingerie store Honey Birdette.

Activist group Collective Shout pointed out that the children who attended were exposed to sexualised and bondage-themed advertising.

‘How many kids will have to walk past these pornified and degrading representations of women to attend their school holiday activity?’ the group asked.

‘We’ve censored this image for you, but Honey Birdette is showing kids the uncensored version, featuring women’s exposed genitals – and Lakeside Joondalup is allowing it.’

Responding to the complaints, the shopping centre clarified that the activity was hosted by an independent client in a space about 50-metres away from the lingerie store. They added that the children would have been able to access the area without having to pass the Honey Birdette store.

What are your thoughts on this story? Do you agree with the Darwin woman or was she overreacting? Let us know in the comments!

Another "Karen" she obviously never goes to the beach or a swimming pool because she would see exactly the same thing there. Lighten up lady.

Ooh la la.

Ok it depends how risque the video is, if it us too much then video should be played only inside.

But we take kids to the beach they see women in thongs and topless so really not much different.
Are these parents also protecting them from what is being shown on TV.

Now from an adults view I love beautiful underwear and years ago seeing a video like this would have enticed me into the shop. 😁

After all my mum always said make sure you wear you best underware out as you never know.

I always took that incase I was in an accident but now I'm rethinking that quote

Showing female bottoms in underwear/swimware is just part of the problem. Look at the shoe stores showing womens ankles. They should be publicly whipped.

Let's face it. Societies views on morals and modest is constantly changeing. Sometime for the worse and sometimes for the better.

Be vary careful about how you view these types of things or you end up in a society frozen in restictive belief. Look at the various restrictions placed on people by religion. And I don't necessarily mean our Muslim friends. There are Christian sects and other religions that are just as restrictive and prohibitive.

If you object to something, don't attact it, use rational thought and arguement to have it changed. BUT, remember, society's rules are not fixed and constantly change. Somtimes for the better and sometime fore the worse. We as individuals have our on belielfs and values. Let others have theirs, provided they are not extreme.

Be productive in s society not destructive.

Well said I always respect others belief's the same as I expect them to respect mine

My favousaying is ' let's agree to disagree'

Since the age of 10, now 14, my grand daughter has always said of the ads in the bras n things windows that they’re pornographic and shouldn’t be there infront of kids ( not all the raunchiest) now it’s sexist and demeaning
Yesterday’s discussion was the right place right time discussion , like swimwear on the beach

Unless kids have changed radically from when I was a child the majority of them wouldn't even see and register the pictures. If something isn't for them then it is instantly rejected. I would suggest that she is projecting her thoughts and feelings onto kids and that maybe they say more about her than the images.:sneaky:

Why do so many people resort to name-calling and insults to make their point, instead of making a reasonable and intelligent argument, or accepting that other people might have a different but equally valid point of view? Nowadays, women are automatically labelled as a "Karen" (or some other insult) if other people don't happen to agree with them. Everybody has the right to their opinion but please present your viewpoint rationally. The minute you resort to name-calling, you've lost the argument.

When I lived in England (before becoming enlightened enough to move here) I worked for' Dorothy Perkins' a woman's apparel shop. We had to iron everything that went into a window display including lace underwear. This,.was way before things like videos to advertise things. We had to just hint at the value of nice underwear not blatantly show it! Good times compared to today when anything shown in window displays is as crushed looking as when it was taken from the packing. not an enticing look for my mind.

OH DEAR, I am 65 years old and have morals and so do my adult kids and they teach their kids the same way, but there is no stopping kids from seeing what is on TV at anytime of the day and night, even the shopping channels don't leave much to the imagination with the skimpy outfits, and some of the swimsuits on Home and Away are pretty brief as well and I know people who have children who watch that every night as well, if kids want to see it then they will find a way but maybe a bit more discretion by some to the store would help. Plenty of porn mags on shelves in the newsagents, and YAHOO has of late had on their news pics of all the LATEST swim wear including the model wearing masking tape over all her bits, nothing left to the imagination but took 12 hour to put on, certainly would not need to shave or wax after she took it all off.

Nobody is more determined than I am to stop the sexualising of children. Kids these days are being exposed to far too many things they’re not mature enough to understand. However. Does this silly woman understand that many of those children she’s protesting on behalf of have mums and/or older sisters wearing this underwear? Her attitude is so Victorian, that it’s almost unbelievable.
