Attention: Important Double Recall Alert – These two everyday items might pose serious risks!

We all know that sometimes certain products don't always live up to their promises or suddenly develop problems. This is why we believe it's essential to inform our members of any safety recalls.

And recently, we've come across two important recalls on popular products that you might have at home.

First off, is your living room sporting a stylish addition in the form of an Eyecandy Ottoman Round from Fantastic Furniture? If so, please pay close attention.

This popular piece of furniture was recently recalled by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) due to concerns that its metal piece could cause serious injury, including painful lacerations.

The Eyecandy Ottoman Round, available in black and mulberry with distinctive gold banding at the base, was sold both online and at Fantastic Furniture’s physical stores across the country between 1 June 2019 and 6 May 2021.

According to the recall notice, the household item’s ‘metal banding may have sharp edges’.

‘There is a risk of serious injury, including lacerations, if consumers come into contact with the metal banding,’ it continued.

If you happen to have purchased one of these ottomans, stop using it immediately and return it to your nearest Fantastic Furniture store for a full refund.

‘When returning the product, consumers should avoid handling the area around the metal band,’ the notice stated.

‘Otherwise, they should wear protective gear to protect themselves from the risk of injury.

If you are unable to return the product to Fantastic Furniture’s stores, contact their Customer Care team to discuss alternative arrangements instead.

On the other hand, if you've recently purchased a Toyota Corolla Cross, know that there is a recent defect that may affect your car, which could have it rolling away when parked.

The defect affects 1,285 Corolla Cross models, specifically non-hybrid petrol-powered variants built between February 2022 and April 2023. Out of these numbers, 962 cars are already in customers’ hands.

The reason behind the recall is a potential parking brake failure, as Toyota explained in a statement:

‘For involved vehicles, there is a possibility that the brake actuator assembly may falsely detect an overcurrent condition of the electronic parking brake (EPB) actuator and enter failsafe mode.’

‘If the EPB cannot be engaged and the EPB MIL and MID warnings are ignored, and the vehicle is parked on an incline or decline without being placed into "Park", then the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash,’ it continued.

The car manufacturer also specified that the reason the hybrid model isn’t involved in the recall is that it does not use the ‘same control program…the manufacturer of the brake ECU is different’.

To have the defect fixed, Toyota’s dealer network will ‘update the skid control electronic control unit (ECU) software free of charge to vehicle owners’.

Owners of these particular cars should be on the lookout for a notification from Toyota Australia, who will be contacting them via SMS, email, and/or mail. Owners should also check their Corolla Cross’ VIN, as those sequentially between 0J000003 and 0J001343 are affected.

Key Takeaways
  • The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission issued a recall notice for the 'Eyecandy Ottoman Round' sold by Fantastic Furniture due to the potential risk of injury and lacerations.
  • The ottoman recall was prompted by the discovery of sharp edges on the metal banding, which could cause serious injuries.
  • Toyota has announced a recall for a large group of Corolla Cross small SUVs potentially affected by a defect that could result in the car rolling away when parked.
  • For both recalls, customers are encouraged to return the products to the respective retailers for a full refund or repair, and Toyota will update the skid control electronic control unit (ECU) software free of charge for affected vehicle owners.

Now there is a bit of dumb automotive overkill. Just what is wrong with the simple handbrake-cable-brake drum/disc brake system as fitted to my 1998 Ford, or to tens of millions of older cars?

Properly adjusted, that system could be used to bring a car to a safe stop when travelling at 110kph; I've done it.

‘If the EPB cannot be engaged and the EPB MIL and MID warnings are ignored, and the vehicle is parked on an incline or decline without being placed into "Park", then the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash,’ .

That's modern electronic automotive madness at its best.
