How old were you when you found out you were using your rubbish bags wrong? If you're anything like us, you’ve probably been using garbage bags wrong your whole life. And don't worry, you are not alone!
A recent TikTok video has made the rounds on the internet after it revealed that many people don't know the correct way to use a garbage bag. It seems self-explanatory, right?

The clip, which amassed over 2 million views, explained that the bags should come inside out - the seam should always be on the inside whenever you place the bag in your bin.
To fix this, simply grab the bag and fit it around the rim of the bin like a hat. Then, simply push the bag inside the bin and voila the seam is now inside!
Another tip from the video is to use a dryer sheet at the bottom of the trash can to help with odours. This is a great tip if you don't want to use scented garbage bags. You can also throw away any scraps from dinner or any rotting fruit in a separate bag to help limit the smell.
Finally, the video advises that you should clean the inside of your bin every two weeks to keep things clean and fresh. This is definitely a good idea and something that not enough people do. Even we can admit we’re guilty sometimes.

Many TikTok users were astounded by the simple tip, with several claiming that they will be using it from now on.
One person wrote: 'I was today-years-old [when I learnt] how to put a trash bag in. Thank you.'
'Thanks for the tip, seriously going to do it this way from this day on,' another added.
A third chimed in: 'I SWEAR, I’ve learned so much on Tiktok, more than in school.'
Several people claimed that they have been doing this tip for years, with one user sharing: 'My dad showed me that, so I've been doing it ever since.'
Others questioned the practicality of this tip, arguing that regardless of whether you place the bags with seams outside, they can still perform their purpose — which is to hold your trash.
One user asked: 'But WHY should the seam be on the inside?'
Another person replied to this query, explaining: 'The scent is sprayed on the outside of the bag at the factory so when you flip it the scent overwhelms the odour on the inside.'
Meanwhile, some people urged the original poster to compost the food scraps instead of throwing them in a separate bag.
One comment read: 'No old veggies & fruit should go in your green bin or your own compost.'
Others took the opportunity to share their own techniques to minimise the odour of the bin.
'Put baking soda in the bottom, it will neutralise odours and will prevent messy leaks!' one user advised.
Thanks to TikTok, we can all be a little bit more informed about the things we use every day.
So there you have it, folks. A few simple tips to help you make the most of your trash bags. Who knew there was so much to learn?
