Are turmeric supplements hurting your liver? TGA issues warning for over 600 medicines

We’ve all heard about the health benefits of turmeric–from boosting brain power to aiding digestive troubles. This ancient spice loved worldwide for its potent antioxidant compounds has even become a staple in many pantries in Australia.

But did you know that taking certain turmeric supplements could risk your health? The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has issued a warning, revealing the life-threatening risk of liver injury posed by turmeric’s active ingredient: curcumin.

According to the regulator, there have been 18 reports of related liver injury recorded by June 29, and at least one death caused by a medicinal dosage of curcumin.

‘Available evidence shows that there is a rare risk of liver injury from taking Curcuma longa (turmeric) and/or curcumin in medicinal dosage forms,’ the warning stated.

However, the TGA confirmed that the risk for liver injury doesn’t relate to turmeric consumed in typical quantities in food.

But why have these warnings come out now?

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is just one spice within the Curcuma genus, which naturally produces curcumin. It is also found in Curcuma aromatica, Curcuma zanthorrhiza and Curcuma zedoaria– all of which are now under investigation by the TGA–in light of reports of liver injury caused by medicinal dosages of medications usually made from turmeric or its active ingredient.

Leading the cause for concern is that over 600 medicines listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) have been found to contain curcumin, and medicines and herbal supplements containing curcumin compounds are readily available without a prescription in supermarkets, health food shops and pharmacies.

So how can you tell if curcumin has been used in a supplement, medication or herbal product?

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as looking for ‘turmeric’ in the ingredients list.

Curcumin occurs in other Curcuma species used in medicines and supplements. Just to be safe, should look for Curcuma aromatica, Curcuma zanthorrhiza and Curcuma zedoaria on the packaging.

Last year, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) reported adverse effects of curcumin supplements, which also included cases of hepatitis.

The report mentioned that curcumin has poor bioavailability, meaning that much of the product is not absorbed into the bloodstream before it leaves the body.

However, some products, like piperine–found in black pepper–can naturally enhance the bioavailability of curcumin.

‘Manufacturers have developed various formulations to increase this bioavailability and thereby enhance the effects of curcumin,’ ANSES said.

Here’s the main tip for folks who think they might be taking a curcumin supplement: ANSES recommends limiting daily intakes of curcumin to below 153mg for a 60kg adult.

So if you’re taking turmeric supplements, look out for the daily dosage on the back of the packaging–and make sure it's in line with their recommendations.

TGA also advised those with a history of liver problems to avoid taking medicines or supplements containing the mentioned Curcuma species and/or curcumin.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing any of the following symptoms, please stop taking the supplements immediately and seek medical advice:

If you have any questions or concerns about this issue, please discuss it with your healthcare provider.

You may also report suspected side effects for any medicine or supplements with Curcuma species and/or curcumin to TGA here or consult a doctor.

Currently, TGA is monitoring the situation and considering regulatory action, including a warning label consultation. They will publish their recommendations later this year.

‘There is not enough information at this time to conclusively identify which medicines are higher risk,’ TGA said.

Key Takeaways
  • The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has revealed a link between liver injury and curcumin, an ingredient in turmeric and other spices.
  • The risk does not associate with turmeric consumed in typical quantities as a food product but only with medicinal doses of curcumin.
  • Over 600 medicines listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods contain curcumin.
  • French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) reported adverse effects of curcumin supplements in 2022, citing that the ingredient has poor bioavailability.
  • The TGA recommended anyone taking curcumin supplements who experiences possible symptoms of liver damage, such as yellowing skin or eyes, to seek immediate medical advice.

The ANSES and the TGA's warning is an important reminder to stay vigilant when taking supplements. Stay safe, folks!

Last year (2022) I commenced taking one Turmeric tablet daily to counter inflation. Some time after commencement I contracted Hepatitis E resulting in rapid liver deterioration (now recovered). It also resulted in damage to the Phrenic nerve which severely affected the Diaphragm and left me with significant breathing issues. Was this due to Turmeric? Interesting.
Are you sure It isn’t from some other cause?

Over 12 months ago there was warning that some diet supplements had caused liver failure from the amount of caffeine in these products and some people needed liver transplants .

I was recently diagnosed with high liver enzymes and continuing to rise over 4 sets of blood tests over 2 months. Liver ultrasound came back as "unremarkable". I am not a drinker, reasonable exercise, eat well and take supplements. I was referred to a liver specialist to see what the problem could be. My GP asked me to come off all my supplements, one of which was Curcumin twice daily, and low and behold the next lot of blood tests showed liver enzymes have come back to acceptable. I will mention curcumin to the specialist when I see them next month.

The TGA warning about supplements and natural cures that are not subject to clinical trials? Because big pharma is terrified they might be more beneficial than all their drugs? If they're so concerned, conduct the trials. I read recently about an amino acid that was causing havoc and it turned out the manufacturer had genetically altered their product then on-sold it to different companies. So it wasn't the natural product but the interference that created the problem. I'm wondering if this could be similar because tumeric has been around for millenia, causing no problems whatsoever and helping millions of people.

Very true.

The side effects on the liver of Curcumin might be correct, but the TGA lost its credibility on these matters when it banned Ivermectin during the Covid plandemic. The TGA supported the US narrative suggesting Ivermectin is bad, it does not help for Covid. I'm from Africa where Ivermectin was widely used by remote communities during the Plandemic and with good outcomes. It is used for Malaria, I used it too, and no adverse effects were recorded. Now suddenly when the Plandemic is supposedly over - the arrival of a new Covid in spite - the TGA withdrew its ban! One can't rely on such people.
It was never approved by anyone to treat the virus. 🙄
Maybe you missed out on the following when the virus was worse?

"Ivermectin tablet can be used for various parasitic infections such as thread worm infestation, river blindness disease, round worm infestation, whipworm infestation, filariasis (also called elephantiasis), tropical eosinophilia, and loiasis."

Nothing about COVID.

I agree Danven, there were a lot of inconsistencies about treatments - and a lot of people who just believed what they were told and obviously still do. The scamdemic certainly sorted the sheep from the goats. Trump copped a lot of flak for daring to say Ivermectin was a valid treatment and who is to say what is right and what is wrong when young healthy people are dropping dead for no apparent reason. I myself received 2 vaccinations and still got covid. If it was smallpox and we still got smallpox would we still say the vaccine was effective? It is a miracle that influenza totally disappeared while covid was rampant. Unheard of with any other virus. There are a lot of unanswered questions but there won't be any answers while the majority accept the blatant and obvious lies still being told,.

I didn't realise there were still sheep around believing nonsense conspiracy theories?

I'll repeat again what that drug should be for....."Ivermectin tablet can be used for various parasitic infections such as thread worm infestation, river blindness disease, round worm infestation, whipworm infestation, filariasis (also called elephantiasis), tropical eosinophilia, and loiasis", but you seriously want to believe what Trump, with no medical expertise at all, said about it? That would be really funny if it wasn't so serious. You're a bit wrong with..."the majority accept the blatant and obvious lies still being told." Luckily it's the majority that believe the proper facts about it all, not the small minority that doesn't want to believe anything for some reason.

If you and your fellow disbelievers think it was so good, why didn't you take that instead of having vaccinations as you seem to think it cures Covid? And regarding vaccinations. Nobody said you can't get Covid even if you've been vaccinated. You can still get it but wont end up feeling so bad or end up in hospital.

Keep believing the hype. Todays fact was yesterdays conspiracy theory. How did vaccination wipe out smallpox if it was only effective at lessening the symptoms? Nonsensical claptrap.
