Another viral Coles giveaway?! Shoppers are already talking

Retail promotions often spark a frenzy, especially when they involve sought-after household items.

After the success of a previous campaign that had shoppers racing to stores, a major supermarket chain has unveiled its latest collectable offer.

Here's what customers need to know about the new range hitting shelves soon.

A major Australian supermarket chain launched a new collectable promotion after shoppers rushed to stores for its previous offering.

Coles announced a six-piece collection of leakproof glass containers, along with a manual vacuum pump, which would be available for customers to collect.

Made from durable borosilicate glass, the containers were designed to be stacked in the fridge, pantry, or freezer.

The promotion was in partnership with Michelin-star chef Curtis Stone, who praised the collection’s versatility.

‘Busy home cooks need durable storage and cookware, so I’m excited to launch my new glass container collection to provide Coles customers with new ways to cook, serve and store their food,’ he said.

‘The beauty of this collection is its versatility—you can cook, store and serve, all in the same container. So, whether you’re batch cooking, prepping ingredients or packing up delicious leftovers, these pieces do it all.’

To take part in the promotion, shoppers had to spend $20 or more in one transaction and scan their Flybuys card.

Once enough credits were collected, the items could be redeemed online or in-store, though the app was excluded.

For those who didn’t want to wait, the collection was also available for purchase at full price.

Coles’ chief customer officer, Amanda McVay, said research had shown a strong demand for quality food storage solutions.

‘We’re delighted to team up with Curtis Stone to help customers upgrade their kitchens, make storing meals easier, reducing food prep time and reduce food waste just when our latest customer research shows that over the past year, more than half of our customers are cooking at home more often, and a third of shoppers are cooking in batches to freeze their meals,’ she said.

The promotion followed Coles’ September 2024 Kitchen Knife Credits campaign, which saw customers eagerly collect a range of stainless steel knives and a retro-style knife block in collaboration with home appliance brand SMEG.

That campaign, which launched on 18 September, became a viral sensation, with shoppers praising the offer.

One customer shared online: ‘You don’t understand the way I ran to Coles to get this SMEG knife block.’

Another said: ‘Who was going to tell me that Coles, SMEG and Flybuys were all coming together for a three-way? You can shop and earn products … pardon? I am so excited. It’s so pretty.’

The SMEG knife block, available in black or cream, had never been sold locally before but retailed for approximately $900 in the US.

Coles later removed kitchen knives from its shelves nationwide after a 63-year-old woman, Claudia Campomayor Watt, was allegedly stabbed while stocking her fridge.

Following the incident, the supermarket cited increased aggression and violence as reasons for the decision.

The new collectable range was set to launch on 19 March.

In a previous story, Coles shoppers voiced their frustration over finding questionable food items on shelves.

Concerns were raised about product quality, with some customers sharing their experiences online.

I don’t buy anything extra to gain the giveaways. I’m looking forward to collecting the new ones. I think it’s great. I just do my normal shop and collect my credits. Even if I can’t use them I get them for my daughter in law or other family members. I’ve had beautiful glasses, useful knives, great bakeware amongst other things. For me there’s no con job, it’s just business as usual with a bonus

Its bad enough that we have to pay the price advertised for our groceries which amounts to
More than we anticipated but to try and get their Customers to spend a certain amount
In order to to purchase what is deemed as “ giveaways “ is ludicrous .

I don't want a container that requires a vacuum pump. Curtis Stone can keep his containers, unless he wants to wash that silly pump for me after I use it. Of course that's not going to happen, so it's a futile effort from Coles.

No one said you have to have them.

I have flybuy $, and I don't want them. That's what I'm saying.
But it doesn’t affect your flybuy dollars. It’s totally seperate. If you don’t want to use the credits you get for just doing your shopping then you don’t have to use them. credits and Flybuys are two different things

Yes, I realise that. I must have offended you somehow, because you obviously like them and want them. That's perfectly okay.

Not offended at all. I just don’t want people to miss out cos they think they have to do something other than their normal shop to get the freebies if they want them

At prices you cannot afford.... it is all built into the price... nothing if for free

But I’m paying those prices whether I take the ‘free‘ gift or not. Even the same prices at other supermarkets without the bonus
Those prices are inflated.... mark it up to mark it down.....the advertised price is the 'REAL' price. The advertised price should be the 'REAL' prices discounted. These supermarkets get away with blue murder.
Anyone who shops Coles or Woolies needs a psychiatrist fast. Haven't shopped there for over 20 years and saved thousands.

They probably are inflated, as are the prices at the other supermarkets. I shop at Cole’s or Woolies. IGA are more expensive, Aldi is a waste of time for me - don’t get me started. Coles is my preferred place to shop as I can get all the brands I buy and I know I’ll be happy with what I buy and not have to throw stuff away (as what happens if I shop at Aldi.) Woolies I find is slightly more expensive than Coles. So, I shop Coles. I would anyway, whether they give me stuff or not. I might as well take it if they are offering. I also shop at the local butchers and other local shops but for my preferred brands i’ll stick with my choice
