Anger boiling over! Protester arrested for hurling eggs at King Charles

It’s safe to say that anything about the royal family is a topic sure to invite intense and varied reactions.

The storied family evokes so many strong emotions in some of us that it’s sometimes inevitable for unfortunate things to happen.

Case in point: what happened to King Charles and his Queen Consort, Camilla, during a visit to Yorkshire County in England.

You see, they were there on the second day of their royal tour and were greeting many people who took time to line the streets and pay their respects.

And out of nowhere, a flying egg was spotted zooming through the air towards the King!

Three more were lobbed at the royal by a protester, and luckily for him, not one met their target.

To his credit, King Charles was described as unfazed throughout the short commotion.

Reports say he gave the cracked eggshells on the ground a glance before going about his business. This led some to observe he ‘kept calm and carried on’ as his mother usually did.

His security detail also quickly stepped in and moved the royal pair away from the crowds for protection.

According to witnesses, the protester, a 23-year-old male student of the University of York, was heard shouting ‘this country was built on the blood of slaves’ as he hurled the eggs.

Many in the crowd disapproved of the incident and took to booing the protester who was promptly detained by police.

In true Brit fashion, there were even chants of ‘God Save the King’ that broke out.

The university is investigating the incident on grounds of misconduct.

Thankfully, the rest of the royal couple’s visit went smoothly.

After the egg-throwing interlude, King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla visited and spoke with a young local boy named Jason, who is visually impaired.

The York City Council then read their formal welcome of the couple to the city in a short ceremony.

Soon after, the King and Queen Consort departed for York Minster.

It was there that the King unveiled the first statue commemorating his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, since her death in September.

We must say, the two-metre tribute caught the likeness of the departed monarch, up to that dignified and serene air she always seemed to have about her.

In a speech, the King said: ‘The late Queen was always vigilant for the welfare of her people during her life.’

‘As we have witnessed, with great sadness, the passing of that reign, it is unveiled in her memory, as a tribute to a life of extraordinary service and devotion.’

Key Takeaways

  • King Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort have had eggs thrown at them during an outing in Yorkshire on Wednesday.
  • The couple arrived for the welcoming ceremony to the City of York at Micklegate Bar and greeted well-wishers lining the streets.
  • But soon the walkabout went awry when a protester hurled the supermarket item at His Majesty from among the crowd.
  • The King was unfazed and looked at the splattered eggs on the ground next to him, then continued greeting locals.
  • As three more eggs were thrown, all of which missed their targets, security stepped in and moved the royals back from the crowds and towards the mayor.
  • The protester, a 23-year-old man, was quickly arrested by police.
  • Later in the day, King Charles unveiled a commemorative statue of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.
‘Her image will watch over what will become Queen Elizabeth Square for centuries to come.’

After the unveiling of the statue, the King and the Queen Consort went to Doncaster, where they had another ceremony. This time, it was to officially confer the place its city status.

The King also took his time greeting crowds who ventured out to meet him.

To end the day’s activities, Charles and Camilla then attended a reception, where the food offered included — we are not making this up — free-range egg and watercress sangas.

We wonder if the King took a bite out of one…

If you have time, be sure to check out this profile of King Charles beyond the crown he now bears.

You might also be interested in the response he gave the actor who plays him in a controversial Netflix series when the latter sent him a letter.

What do you think of the unfortunate egg-hurling incident the King was subjected to? Should the protester be punished for his exercise of free speech and expression?

I'm not a fan of Charles but you think it's alright to throw things at people just because you disagree with them
He’s not just ordinary people and he’s not popular because of Camilla I personally can’t stand the woman sour faced no personality and made Diana’s life with Charles a misery I’d like to throw rotten eggs at Camilla

I personally don’t think Charles should be the king. He should step down and let William take the Throne he’s no better than his brother who has been discarded because for what he’s done. In my eyes he chose to divorce Dianna. “Do the crime do the time.”

I am not a fan of Charles & think Camilla looks strange the way she holds her head, which may be a medical problem, but l do not agree with the egg throwing.

I thought the way the student was unceremoniously carried away by the police very fitting though. A fixture in two places holding both legs together so he couldn't kick with hands behind his back was no less than he deserved. Whether those eggs hit their target or not, this was an assault on the King of England.

I did not understand his rant about 'the country being built on the blood of slaves'. I do not remember slavery ever mentioned in history books in England, only America, unless he was referring to child labour & the William Wilberforce era.

I'm an-ex Pom in Australia. I don't particularly care whether we have a king or not, but, I do think he's entitled to some common respect. And throwing eggs is NOT a sign of common respect.
That stupid, immature little idiot should be definitely kicked out of University. Later, when he can't get a job because of his lack of education, perhaps he'll learn the meaning of the words 'çommon respect'.
