Amanda Keller shares heartfelt tribute to her husband amid health struggles

Celebrities often capture our attention with their glamorous lifestyles and on-screen talent, but behind the scenes, many face personal battles that touch the hearts of their fans.

When public figures share their struggles, it can shine a light on important issues, inspiring support and awareness. This is especially true when they open up about health challenges concerning their families, offering a glimpse into their resilience and the love that supports them through the toughest times.

These moments remind us that no matter the fame, everyone experiences hardships, and the strength found in these stories can be profoundly moving.

Amanda Keller, a beloved Australian TV and radio personality, recently shared a deeply moving tribute to her husband, Harley Oliver, as they marked their 34th wedding anniversary last week—a milestone overshadowed by his ongoing battle with Parkinson's disease.

In October 2023, Keller courageously opened up about her husband's condition, which they had kept private for six years.

The revelation of Harley's Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological disorder characterised by tremors, stiffness, and difficulties with balance and coordination, initially left the couple ‘completely numb’.

In a heartfelt social media post, Keller offered a glimpse into the couple's enduring love and resilience in the face of a devastating diagnosis that has profoundly affected their lives.

Despite the absence of a cure and the challenges that come with the disease, Keller's recent post reflects a powerful message of hope and the unshakeable bond between the two.

The social media tribute featured a nostalgic black and white photograph of the couple, beaming with the joy of their early years together.

Keller's caption, ‘Occasionally a photo pops up in your memories just when you need to see it,’ spoke to the serendipity of rediscovering cherished moments during trying times.

‘Harley and I celebrated our 34th wedding anniversary last week. This pic must have been taken just a few years later. Harley’s Parkinson’s disease has sent a variety of challenges that he accepts with stoicism and grace (more so than I do).’

‘But the essence of “him” and “us” remains. It’s the stuff we all face as we age and grow and morph, If we’re lucky,’ she continued.

The response to Keller's post was an outpouring of love and support from fans and fellow celebrities alike.

Other celebrity figures shared their admiration and encouragement, recognising the couple's strength and the depth of their connection.

‘In essence, a few life times together already, how wonderful LOVE,’ Jimmy Barnes’ wife, Jane, commented.

‘Beautiful people,’ celebrity cook Julie Goodwin remarked.

‘That’s amore,’ Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac said.

‘Such a great shot,’ Dream Home host Chris Brown wrote. ‘The essence of you two.’

Keller's candid reflection on the early days following Harley's diagnosis is both poignant and relatable.

‘I first noticed Harley’s footfall around the house changing, like he was dragging his leg, and his hands started to shake, and he said he’d just been whacked in the thumbs as a wicket keeper playing cricket,’ she shared at the time.

‘But I felt something was going on. When (Harley) came home (after receiving the diagnosis), we both just sat there completely numb.’

‘Two days later, I went with our eldest son Liam to an open day. He was in Year 11 and I fought tears all day just looking at these (young) people at the beginning of their journey, and I was so envious. I had such a flashback to when that was me.’

‘And I thought, “Their journey is just starting,” and something closed off for me. I don’t necessarily feel that now, but this is how I felt in the early days,’ Keller added.

Keller mentioned that her husband's diagnosis had made her a kinder person, yet also a ‘sadder’ one. She confessed that she occasionally felt frustrated by their situation, aware that there was nothing she could do to alter or control it.

‘All the things that it does, I thought, “Why isn’t he fighting it?”’ she shared.

‘And of course, I’ve come to see he can’t control this, and neither can I, and that’s been a big lesson for me.’

The decision to keep Harley's Parkinson's private for so long was not without its difficulties as Keller talked about.

‘It’s hard when people ask, “What’s going on with Harley?”’ she said.

‘People are shocked at the changes, and I can’t make that better for anybody.’

‘It’s not a surprise to me, but I still don’t know what to say,’ Keller continued.

Keller's openness resonated with many, prompting followers to share their own experiences with Parkinson's.

‘My Mum & Dad faced this same dilemma,’ one follower shared.

‘But the love & history they had with each other got them through. It totally sucks! But their beautiful memories that so validates everything about who they are together as a whole is all that matters!’

‘Sending you lots of love,’ they added.

Another wrote, ‘Such a gorgeous photo! My father battled Parkinson’s for a very long time.’

‘Stay strong and love and best wishes to you both.

The challenges faced by Keller and her husband resonate deeply with many who are dealing with similar circumstances. It's a poignant reminder that even those in the public eye are not immune to life's hardships.

Another well-known figure who bravely shared his personal health battle is beloved comedian Billy Connolly, who openly discussed his struggles with the same disease.

Connolly's candid revelations highlighted the universal nature of these struggles, further emphasising the importance of support and understanding for those affected by debilitating illnesses.

Love Amanda Keller.
Sad to hear, but hardly devastating to the world.
And SDC is this a little sick joke in the the story?
Keller's recent post reflects a powerful message of hope and the unshakeable bond between the two.

Amanda - you must retain the ability to laugh, both of you - this disease is different for each sufferer and when you find humour in a lot of what happens it helps a lot. My husband calls it MTOW - my terrorist organisation within and we often make fun of MTOW as levity helps with the depression that is close to the surface all the time. My husband has had Parkinson's for 13 years and in those years we have worked out how to handle it and better than the Neuro, who has finally realised we have, together gotten pretty good control over it because we talk and listen and observe - and I don't miss a thing - much to his disgust (lol)

Very sad, I have always liked Amanda Keller. I’m sure they will be able to make the best of the situation they are in, their love and support for each other will help them cope with the downside of what life has dealt them.

Yes but I found it essential to talk about the fact that we were dealing with Altzeimers and everyone generally were so understanding. I don’t think it would have been possible to hide it actually. So sad to stand by and see your partner disintegrate
