Parents and grandparents, we have an important safety alert for you. The Oodie—an online retailer of wearable blankets—has issued a product recall for their Kids Beach Oodie due to a safety risk.
The impacted Oodies were sold online between September 29, 2022, and July 14, 2023. It is likely that many impact Oodies were gifted to children for Christmas. Adults have also been known to purchase this due to its lower price point.
Product Safety Australia (PSA) has warned that the product does not comply with mandatory safety standard requirements fas it does not have the necessary fire hazard labelling.
'There is a risk of serious burn injuries if exposed to a heat or flame source,' PSA said.
The prints affected are avocado, fruit faces, blue tie-dye, charcoal, happy flowers, and stripes. If you bought an Oodie in one of these prints, you must take immediate action.
PSA have warned consumers to 'immediately stop wearing the product' and to contact The Oodie for either a fire warning label to attach to the Oodie, or a replacement Oodie from the Kids Beach product range.
'The Oodie will also be sending affected consumers an email with the above remedies,' PSA said.
Even if your child or grandchild’s Oodie isn’t one of those affected, it may be a good idea to check the PSA website for any similar recalls or updates.
Shoppers who want further information can visit The Oodie’s website or send the company an email at [email protected].
Understanding the Risks and Prevention Measures Regarding Flammable Children Wear
Manufacturers are required by law to ensure that children’s nightwear is fire-resistant. They have to carry the necessary fire hazard label and need to pass rigorous tests to make sure that they do not easily ignite or spread flames.
But what should you do besides responding to a recall? Prevention is key!
Educate children about the dangers of fire and the importance of staying away from heat sources.
It might also be a good idea to familiarise yourself with the specific materials to be wary of–rayon, nylon, and certain types of treated cotton.
Importantly, keep open flames, such as candles or fireplaces, away from children, regardless of what they're wearing. Adequate supervision and arming yourself with the necessary knowledge will go a long way in ensuring the safety of the little ones in your family.
