Alert for shoppers: This popular treat could make your pet sick—is it in your home?

We all know that our furry companions are more than just pets; they're part of the family. That's why it is crucial to stay informed about potential dangers that could affect their health and well-being.

A recent incident involving a popular treat has raised serious concerns about pet product safety, which all pet owners should know.

This story serves as a reminder to be vigilant about the products we give to our furry companions and to stay updated on any safety recalls or warnings.

The treat in question, the Bow Wow Prosciutto Bone, has been linked to a severe illness in a dog named Tucker, a four-year-old Labrador from the Perth suburb of Kallaroo.

Tucker's story is a cautionary tale for all who spoil our pets with treats.

After trying the treat for the first time on 4 January, Tucker became alarmingly ill.

His usual energetic and friendly demeanour changed drastically; he became lethargic and unresponsive.

Sasha Wadham shared Tucker's story and described the distressing situation.

When her husband visited her sister's house to help move furniture, he noticed Tucker's unusual behaviour.

The family quickly realised something was wrong and rushed Tucker to the hospital.

'It was 100 per cent confirmed on Monday when they did a scan and they could see the splintered bone all inside,' Wadham said.

The situation escalated when Tucker was transferred to the ICU at Murdoch Veterinary Animal Hospital, where he stayed for five days.

'Vets have said this is one of the worst cases they have ever seen,' she added.

The financial burden on the family was immense, with veterinary bills accumulating to at least $13,900.

Despite setting up a GoFundMe page that raised over $6,000, the family had to rely on four credit cards to manage the expenses.

This incident is not isolated. Other dog owners have come forward with similar experiences related to the Bow Wow Prosciutto Bone.

One such owner, Graham, revealed that his 12-year-old dog endured a comparable ordeal, with survival costs reaching $12,000.

Despite complaints to Woolworths and Bow Wow, the response was lacklustre, with no immediate action to address the issue.

The outcry from pet owners and the public has prompted action.

Bow Wow has confirmed that the Prosciutto Bone will be removed from shelves following reviews and consultations with industry experts.

'Following recent reviews and consultations with industry experts in 2024, we have decided that the Prosciutto Bone will be phased out of the market by the end of March 2025 as we explore alternative offerings,' the company announced.

'We are aware of an incident involving a dog, Tucker, and are currently conducting a thorough investigation and review of this case.'

'With that said, we have always been committed to regularly reviewing and improving our product range.'

While Bow Wow states that its products adhere to industry guidelines and that packaging includes necessary disclosures, they also recognise that not all treats suit every dog.
Woolworths, one of the retailers selling Bow Wow products, has forwarded the report to the brand for investigation and expressed their understanding on the matter.

'We understand how distressing this owner’s experience has been,' a Woolworths spokesperson said.

'We take the safety of our customers and their pets seriously.'

Coles and IGA, which also carry Bow Wow products, do not have this specific product listed on their websites.

As responsible pet owners, we must be vigilant about the treats and toys we provide.

Constantly monitor your pets when they're enjoying a treat, and be aware of any changes in their behaviour or health.

If you suspect a product is unsafe, don't hesitate to contact the retailer or the manufacturer and seek veterinary care.

Why are people expecting to get donations on a go fund me page. If you can afford a pet, you can afford pet insurance.

At the time a person adopts/buys a pet, they may well be able to afford it; food, insurance, accessories etc. But unfortunately, finances can take a downturn that are unforeseen.

I don’t agree with the “Go Fund Me” donations though.

We are all struggling but we save all we can for a rainy day - that includes expensive pet treatments etc. If you can't afford it, don't get a pet.

If this product has been proven to be the cause of the dog's health issues, then it is totally irresponsible of the stores to keep them on their shelves. A very bad decision as it could cause them legal problems in the future.
The supermarkets and the manufacturer deserve to be sued if they are not taking this seriously

Back in my day, the dogs ate what we ate...except chicken. What is this nonsense about buying pet food?

Phased out by March 2025!!!

WHAT???

EVERY DOG LOVER READING THIS, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL DOGS, TAKE TIME TO TELL EVERY DOG OWNER YOU KNOW TO NOT BUY THIS PROSCIUTTO DOG BONE.
Exactly what I was thinking. Don’t “phase out” REMOVE IMMEDIATELY! 😡

My dog gets fresh drumsticks from Coles or Woolworths which he loves and eats as part of his daily feed. As a treat, I buy him Schmackos, and he goes whacko for them. They are harmless and he loves them. I would never give him a cooked bone (or smoked) ever as they can indeed splinter and cause enormous damage to the digestive system. He gets the occasional fresh kangaroo leg bone (detached from the kangaroo) or he often looks forward to a fresh beef bone from the local butcher. These bones have lots of good things inside them and the only drawback is the mess that usually occurs after he has finished with it.
I probably shouldn't have to mention it but you do take the small bone from the side of the drumstick off before you feed it to your dog don't you?
That is a choking hazard.

Woolworths has six 1 star absolutely scathing reviews.
WOW and they are still selling this shit.
well it's all about sales/profits for these stores, how dare they are still selling this product when the animals have suffered so greatly, the owners have just bought them a treat which the store has accepted to be sold thru them! - Bow Wow should be responsible to pay the total cost off the Vet Bill in all cases, and if the stores are still selling them, and won't stop, they should be fined. This product should be immediately taken off the shelves. Bow wow states they will be phased out by the end off March!! and they state they will continue to review and investigate the Tucker incident - what needs investigating, you have the facts, and the outcome from your product being consumed by poor Tucker, which the owner gave in good faith as a treat! Consumers have rights and their is an investigative body that must look into this, Tucker has loving owners that will speak on his behalf-wishing you a full recovery Tucker:_) Take them to Court no matter how long it takes, Tucker could have lost his life to there product! They need to be held accountable and responsible for what they are delivering as an edible product for animal consumption!

I would imagine, if there is veterinary proof that this product was the cause of this dogs illness, or any other dogs, that you could sue this company for the medical expenses at the very least.
Agree, The facts and evidence are there via the Vet, and the emergency care Tucker required, the company needs to pay all vet expenses and any ongoing medical expenses, the company needs to
take this seriously, just as they would if it was there own Pet!

I'm not to sure why some comments are saying - " if this product was found to be the cause" - it was the cause the hospital confirmed that they could see all the splintered bone inside when tucker was in ICU at murdoch for 5 days! Do not be afraid off stating the facts as they are - the evidence is right there in our faces, it is not hearsay, as written in the piece we have chosen to read, if it was our dog, we would be doing something about it i am sure.

As soon as the Supplier knows about this they are supposed to notify all businesses they sell the product and announce a "Recall", preferably use by or best before dates eyc.. It the products are sold to a supermarket by a distributor they have to their customers asap, either by email, fax or mail. Having worked for a distributor I should have counted how many thousands of letters were posted every year.
The Retailer should put signs up so the customer sees them.

Sometimes too much damage such as tearing and bleeding is done before there is visible proof.

No, I did not know about that. Thank you for the information. I looked at a couple of drumsticks this morning and could not properly identify the bone to which you refer. Could you possibly give me a little more info, please?

It's that very thin bone as pictured, it should be removed whether cooked or raw.

As far as I know you are not supposed to give dogs cooked bones, only large ones. They can get small cooked bones stuck in their teeth, including lamb shank ones.

Please do not give them any cooked bones, big or small. The problem with cooked bones is that they tend to splinter, which can get caught in the dog's throat or intestines, which can cause massive damage.
