ALDI confirms supermarket expansion to another Australian region

Shoppers in Australia have long known and loved ALDI supermarkets—but for millions of Australians in Tasmania, the Northern Territory, parts of Western Australia and North Queensland, the joy of ALDI has been out of reach.

But today is a special day for Aussies in the North Queensland region, as ALDI have just made a major breakthrough upgrade—something that might give joy to thrifty shoppers who have a knack for affordable buys!

A first in the 22 years it served Aussies, ALDI is breaking the boundaries and bringing its uniquely good shopping experience to the North Queensland region—and it’s creating jobs at the same time.

ALDI Townsville opened its doors in the Willows Shopping Centre today and with it comes an array of fresh innovations.

These include self-checkouts, a modern interior design, and a simple layout to help customers navigate the store. The new, state-of-the-art store has also created forty positions for full-time and part-time employees. It’s an exciting move that will no doubt be welcomed by local shoppers.

'Now more than ever, it’s important that Aussies have access to affordable groceries, so it’s truly a pleasure for us to be able to reach a whole new community of people with our “Good Different” shopping experience,' said ALDI Australia’s Managing Director for Queensland, Bronwyn Post.

‘We know the passion North Queenslanders have for ALDI and how much they’ve been looking forward to ALDI bringing Australia’s lowest-priced groceries to the region.’

She went on to point out that shoppers in Townsville may notice a few differences when visiting their local ALDI for the first time. ‘These differences allow us to cut out unnecessary costs and pass these savings on to customers. Last year alone, we delivered $3.1 billion in savings directly to customers. That’s real money back in the pockets of Australian families,’ she explained.

Some things remain the same. She expressed: ‘Our Price Promise remains the same from the day we opened our first store over 20 years ago—we won’t be beaten on the cost of your weekly shop. We look forward to welcoming the residents of Townsville to the store so they can discover the savings that can be made for themselves.’

Finally, what’s an ALDI store without its famous Special Buys aisle, stocked with new products available to buy every Wednesday and Saturday? ALDI Townsville will be no different, with some exclusive goodies on offer for the grand opening. These include a 10kg Front Load Washing Machine for just $399 and a 32' Philips HD LED Android TV for only $189.

One week, you might stumble upon fitness gear that can completely revamp your home workout routine, the next, you might be intrigued by a vintage record player. No doubt, a shopping trip to ALDI can easily become an exciting adventure for adults!

With the opening of the new ALDI store in Townsville, locals can now experience the thrill of the Special Buys aisle and the fantastic products it has in store!

An integral part of ALDI's market expansion is the substantial positive impact on local economies, particularly in areas such as job creation and local sourcing. Their commitment to employing people within the community and sourcing goods locally is notable, and ALDI Townsville is no exception.

The opening of new ALDI stores invariably brings about a surge in employment opportunities, and the Townsville store has already created forty full-time and part-time positions. This not only provides much-needed employment for locals but also helps to stimulate economic growth within the region. Moreover, ALDI understands that a local workforce is uniquely equipped with knowledge about their own community–something that is invaluable in the retail industry.

ALDI is my favourite supermarket. ♥ ((IGA is my least fav. supermarket, way too expensive))
I agree that IGA is expensive but even ALDI has been and is continuing to catch up to Woolies and Coles.

Many of the ALDI items are now only a cent or a few cents cheaper than branded items sold in Woolies and Coles.

The comparison baskets you see in the ALDI Mag contain items carefully chosen to display cost savings.

ALDI used to be cheaper by many cents on each item. These cents added up to significant dollars at the bottom line.

That was in times gone by.

ALDI started out a 'no frills' store and passed savings on. In recent years it has incorporated frills in to stores and costs have increased accordingly.

I hope that ALDI continues with its FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND expansion, and opens a store in CAIRNS in the near future. I am sure that this community would get behind it with a lot of support. 🤔😉

Agree. And for the a few cents, I go to either Woolies or Coles because I get the rewards points. I only buy in Aldi products that are much cheaper then the other two or an item that the others don’t sale

DONT USE THE SELF CHECKOUT PEOPLES, You are NOT PAID to do it and at the same time you are taking a job away from someone. HELP THE UNEMPLOYED...

I read an article today which said Self -Serve Checkouts aren't working in places like America & at the insistence of customers stores are reverting back to manned checkouts & employing more staff to operate these.
There was no mention of cause as to how this would or would not affect shelf prices.

They are premium BRANDED products also for sale in Coles & Woolworths, I was a sales rep for many years. If you displayed the HOME brands Coles /Woolworths the gap would be alot closer!

Love Aldi, moved here from Central West NSW and have missed Aldi ever since, it will be good to have something I know once again and give Coles and Woolies the flick!! So many of Aldi's own products are so much better than the products Coles and Woolies sell.

s o sad to see they are getting on the self service band wagon. One of the reasons I shop at Aldi. As the thieving goes up - so do the prices for the honest ones
