AIBU, which stands for 'Am I Being Unreasonable', is the perfect platform for sharing your thoughts and opinions! So, for today's AIBU discussion, we have this story from Reddit/Lady_Squids:

Am I being unreasonable for being mad that my family snuck meat in my food when I was a vegetarian?

'In high school, I was a vegetarian for a couple of years. I was really into it, not like vegan-teacher crazy but more like I just enjoyed being in a community. I'm no longer a vegetarian as an adult though.'

'I overheard my mother and grandma laughing and telling something to their friends. Turns out, the whole time I was vegetarian, my whole family (even extended, which is like 50 people) had a game where they would see how often they could sneak me meat. Cooking veggies in bacon grease and stuff like that. At birthday parties, family gatherings, and just dinner at home. It was like an inside joke game for years, and it made me upset.'

'I confronted them, but they said they were only doing it for my own good, that I needed more protein, but they kept smiling and giggling to one another about it, so it felt like more of a joke. I dunno, maybe it wasn't and they really did do it because they cared, but it still feels mean.'

'They all say I'm being a drama queen for being upset. So I guess what do you think? Am I unreasonable for being upset by this or should I just laugh with my family?'

When my granddaughter turned vegetarian {at aged 10} although it was more vegan, I respected her for taking a stand on something she felt very strongly about. I remember one meal she kept asking me if everything was vegetarian the reply was always yes, and I always got a "thank you Nannie". I served brownies for desert and was asked the same question, and she received the same answer no its vegan. Thank you, Nannie - to which I replied, "do you want Ice cream with that". I am pleased to say everyone in the family have respected Skye's stance and to this day although she has relaxed a little bit, she continues to be a vegan/vegetarian.

Don't understand why people don't like to eat meat, I call myself a meatetarian but I certainly do respect their choice to eat whatever they choose and if it doesn't include meat then so be it. Everybody's eating habits are different and should be honored by whoever is doing the cooking for a meal.
You wouldn't slip dairy/wheat/gluten into somebodies food if they have an allergy to it, so I truly don't understand why a person would put meat into a vegan/vegetarian's meal unless they were just absolute ar*eholes.

No, you are not unreasonable. I do not like to eat some common vegetables - pumpkin, sweet potato, Brussels sprouts, asparagus to name a few. However, and strangely enough, I really enjoy a bowl of pumpkin soup with cumin flavouring, onion, a little garlic and a couple of other spices. I make pumpkin soup every winter for my husband and myself. My neighbour cannot understand my dislike of roast pumpkin and almost every time we’ve had dinner at her place she has put a piece on my plate (& served me her version of a meal). Serving someone their food when invited over for a meal at another’s place is the height of bad manners as well.

That is my business and no one else’s. You eat your food & I’ll eat mine!!

Personally they would have worn it, I've never been a vegetarian in fact there was very little in way of meat products I wouldn't eat. Until while in hospital I was fed raw liver? and have never innards again. I remember one time I got home to see him en route to home And I was asked if would like dinner steak and kidney pie, and as soon as she said it, she said she would take out the kidney out. I said no I'd go round to the chippy and she cheekily asked me if i would get her some too?

I would tell the people that scammed (yes scammed) you and are now snickering about it, that any trust you felt as a child is now no more. Not only trust, but respect must be earned and they have shown that they deserve neither. I sincerely hope you find better friends than your own relatives
