After decades in the industry, this popular Channel 7 host is retiring

After an illustrious career spanning 33 years, 7NEWS presenter Jane Doyle OAM has announced her retirement.
The much-loved and respected news broadcaster made the announcement during Thursday’s bulletin, revealing that she will be signing off at the end of this year to pursue other ambitions.
Jane Doyle has been a familiar face on our screens for decades, having presented the highest-rating 6 PM news program for years.
Jane started her career as a newspaper cadet in 1980. Then, she moved to radio, before moving to television news in 1988 with ABC South Australia, where she presented the weekday news bulletin. Jane has fronted 7NEWS Adelaide since 1989.
In a statement released after her announcement, she said:
‘Before I go tonight, I have some significant news of my own to share.
‘It’s been a wonderful privilege for the past 33 years to be invited into your homes and lives to share the day’s news. So, I wanted you to be the first to know I’ve decided to sign off at the end of this year to pursue some other ambitions,’ she continued.
In a separate statement, the well-known TV news host shared: ‘It’s a rare and great privilege to be leaving Channel 7 on my own terms. It’s also been an extremely difficult and bittersweet decision after spending more than half my life in the Seven News presenter’s chair.’
She said that she’s ‘humbled’ to have been invited into the lives of South Australians for more than three decades. She also expressed her joy to have met so many interesting people from all walks of life across those years.
‘I admire the tenacity, expertise, humour, and goodwill of people all over our fabulous state.’
She explained how it was a ‘privilege’ to have worked within the ‘Seven family’ both in Adelaide and across the network, together with other talented and committed individuals.
‘There are so many people who have to do all their jobs well to ensure a news bulletin gets to air on a television platform people have faith and trust in. It’s been a terrific experience and one for which I can never adequately thank the audience and my colleagues.’
Jane also revealed her plans for the ‘next phase’ of her life.
‘Some long service leave travel will kick off in 2023 but my work on the Board of State Opera SA, support for the Adelaide Festival, State Theatre Company and various other arts organisations and my commitment to community groups and charities will continue.’
She shared that she’ll focus on her personal hobbies, such as her newfound passion for watercolour painting, and make time for gardening, cooking, and the novel she’s always wanted to write.
In 2022, Jane was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her contribution to broadcast media and the community.
